BUILT FORD TOUGH TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK PROGRAM LAUNCHES FOR FIFTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR
8/30/2010
DALLAS, August 30, 2010 – For the fifth consecutive year, Ford Motor Company will recognize six outstanding student-athletes each week through the Built Ford Tough Texas High School Football Player of the Week Program. The program invites fans, coaches and Texas media to pay tribute to those players who demonstrate toughness, sportsmanlike conduct and scholarship throughout the high school football season.

“Nothing says ‘Texas’ like trucks and football,” said Philip Podgorny, Ford’s Sales and Marketing Manager of the Central Market Area. “Ford is proud that the F-150 is the ‘Truck of Texas’ and proud to honor the superstars of our state’s favorite pastime through the Built Ford Tough Player of the Week program.”

Again this fall, fans can nominate their favorite players at the redesigned playeroftheweek.com, a web site that allows visitors to catch up with weekly winners, view video clips of players in action and get the latest program details.

Additionally, fans can keep up with award winners through a weekly television show. Ford and the Texas Ford Dealers are teaming up with Fox Sports Southwest to send television crews into communities across the state to shine the spotlight on players who excel on the field, in the classroom and in their communities. The half-hour Built Ford Tough Player of the Week program airs Saturday at 8:30am for twelve weeks beginning September 4, 2010.

Ford Player of the Week Program: How it Works

The Built Ford Tough Texas High School Football Player of the Week program will recognize one high school student-athlete in six of the state’s athletic classifications every week of the regular season of the 2010 Texas high school football schedule. They are selected based upon their individual performance on the field, their contribution to the team and their success in the classroom.

Throughout the 2010 football season, fans can nominate any player who takes the field for the Player of the Week Award, as long as they excel in three categories:

Individual performance on the field, including significant statistics from that week’s game;
Contribution to the team’s success through their individual leadership abilities;
Performance off the field of play, including academic success and good community citizenship.

At the conclusion of the ten-week regular season, Ford and its advisory board will select one student-athlete from the ten weekly winners to be the Built Ford Tough Texas High School Football Player of the Year in each classification. Following the championship games, honorees will once again be recognized at a statewide banquet event.

During the 2009 season, 60 outstanding student-athletes were named Built Ford Tough Texas High School Football Players of the Week. At season’s end, the following players who excelled on the field, in the classroom and in their communities were named as the Built Ford Tough Texas High School Football Players of the Year:

Class 5A: Jeremy Johnson, QB, John Tyler High School,
Class 4A: Scotty Young, QB, Ryan High School, Denton
Class 3A: Darian Godfrey, QB, Gilmer High School,
Class 2A: Nate Jeffery, RB, Caddo Mills High School,
Class 1A: Traylon Shead, RB, Cayuga High School,
Private: Johnny Catalano, QB, Trinity Christian Academy, Addison

Coleman Bluecats Lose Close Battle with Winters Blizzard
8/27/2010

The Coleman Bluecats fought hard but lost in the end to the Winters Blizzards 19 to 14. The Bluecats won the toss and deferred to the second half. Winters scored in the first quarter, also tacking on an extra point. The Cats pushed back in the second quarter with a touchdown, but failed to make the extra point. The Blizzards scored again in the third quarter making the score 13-6, they too failed their extra point attempt. The fourth quarter was packed with excitement and big plays, but also riddle with errors that, in the end, would cost the Cats the game. The end score was 19-14.

Coleman Bluecats Are Gearing Up for a New Season
Submitted by Coach Timms
8/27/2010

The Coleman JV Bluecats were victorious over the Winters JV Blizzards on Thursday night in a hard fought battle that ended with a score of 16-14. The Bluecats got out to a slow start in the first half going into halftime down 6-0. The second half was a different story however, with the Bluecats coming out and scoring touchdowns on their first two possessions of the second half to take a 16 -6 lead into the 4th quarter. Winters JV added a late touchdown to make things close but the Bluecat offense was able to run out the clock after recovering an onside kick attempt. Scoring both touchdowns for Coleman was Daulton Allen who also added both 2-point conversions. Other stand out players included leading rusher Joe Ethridge on offense and PJ Hammonds on defense.

The JV Bluecats’ next game will be at home against the Haskell Indians. We look forward to your support throughout the remainder of the season.

Texas Football Ranks 3-of-4 County Teams In Dead Last
6/25/2010
Dave Campbell’s 2010 edition of Texas Football was not too kind to the Coleman County teams, with the exception of one, Panther Creek. They picked Coleman, Santa Anna and Novice to finish at the bottom of the their respective districts, while the Panthers were picked to finish at the top.

Starting off with the Coleman Bluecats, Campbell picked Sonora to “rule the roost” in District 13-2A, followed by San Saba, Harper, Ozona, Junction and Coleman.

Coach Rusty Buzzard will have four starters returning on offense and three on defense, from the squad that finished 1-9 last season.

In District 10-6M, Santa Anna is picked to finish last in their four-team district behind Blanket, May and Zephyr.

Coach Jim Eubank only returns 2 starters from both offense and defense from the the team that finished 5-5 last year. Texas Football says, “With just two starters back on both sides of the ball, things could be rough in ‘10 for the Mountaineers. But at least the rest of the district is more or less open, so nothing is impossible.”

Last, but certainly not least is District 8-6M which incudes both Panther Creek and Novice. The Panthers are picked to finish first, followed by Paint Rock, Blackwell and Novice.

Novice's Coach Cameron Norris will have five starters returning from both sides of the ball for this year’s campaign, from a team that ended 2009 with a 3-7 record.

Texas Football states, “The Hornets will be in good shape on offense with QB Arispe, who rushed for 1,565 yards and 45 touchdowns last fall, but will need to shore up on the defense that twice gave up 100 points in a game.”

Panther Creek Coach Mitch Lee has 3 returnees on offense and 4 on defense from last year’s team who finished 9-3 and were regional semifinalists.

Texas Football was the kindest to the Panthers, saying, “QB Trevor Smith led the team in most categories, including passing where he completed 50-of-94 passes for 965 yards and 17 touchdowns. Defensively, he grabbed four INTs, returning one for a touchdown. RB Powell was almost as effective in the seven games he played in as just a sophomore, and now he’ll return for his junior year with a solid chance to make all-state. He’s part of a talented junior class that could make waves for the next two years, especially since this group has worked hard this offseason to get stronger and quicker.”

The preseason offensive MVP pick for 8-6M is Trevor Smith of Panther Creek, while the preseason defensive MVP pick is Johnny Stewart.

Summer Work-Outs
6/3/2010
Summer work-outs will be from June 7th through July 29th. The gym will be open from 8:30 am to 11:30 am Monday thru Thursday. The strength and condition program will be run from 9am to 10:30am and this is for the incoming and current high school athletes. The junior high girls are welcome to come up to open gym but can’t be part of the organized work-out.

This is the schedule for the summer. Monday and Wednesday will be upper body and speed and agility drills. Tuesday and Thursday will be lower body and endurance and power drills. The weight room will only be open at the gym from 9am to 10:30am when coaches will be available to oversee the activity. This is a very important time for the girls to work on getting stronger and preparing their bodies for a long season. This also a chance for them to work on specific skills that might be lacking and can be worked during the summer time. If getting to the gym is a problem many of our older girls would be glad to pick you up in town but you have to ask.

We hope to see a lot of you out. The more girls that show up to work-out the more enjoyable it is but understand it is a time to work-out and not a social time during the strength program.

Joshua Reece

Lane 8 to State
5/19/2010
Proud parents Wayne and Karla Reece congratulate their son Joshua Reece on achieving the accomplishment of making it to the UIL State Track and Field competition.

A Junior for Brownwood High School, Joshua competed at State level by participating in two events. Previously during competition at the Texas Tech UIL Regional Track meet Joshua competed in the 4x400 relay and the 400 meter dash. Joshua’s 4x400 relay made it to the finals but fell short from advancing to State. However his 400meter dash required a little extra prayer and effort. He barely made it to the finals in his 400 by coming in 8th place with the slowest time. At the sound of the gun in lane 8, Joshua outran all but one of his competitors coming in 2nd place earning him a trip to the State finals in the 400 meter dash with a final time of 50.81.

During the UIL State Track and Field meet the Brownwood Lions Baseball were also in the playoffs competing in Andrews Tx. A member of Brownwood’s 4x100 sprint relay whom also earned a trip to State was on the baseball team and unable to attend. During the early morning while waiting at the hotel Joshua received a text from Coach Hood, Lions Head Track Coach telling him to start getting ready “you are running on the sprint relay”... With excitement, Joshua then had the opportunity of participating at State level in two events. Joshua ran anchor for the Brownwood Lions earning 8th place finish at State. In his 400 meter dash event Joshua came in 7th with a time of 50.31 outrunning his 1st place rival from the UIL Regional meet at Lubbock. Joshua’s personal best this year for the 400 meter is 50.11. Joshua received the Brownwood Lions Outstanding Track Athlete award.

Joshua is the Grandson of Ernest and Janice Stewart and Marva Baker of Coleman Tx.

Great Season!!
by Coach Tracy Dawson
5/19/2010
The good thing about a playoff season is that you are in the playoffs. Which means you did some get things all season. The bad thing about the playoffs you either win it all or your last game of the season is a loss and you can’t get to the next game to fix it. Everyone seems to remember the loss and not all the good things that happened during the year that got you to that point.

If you had the pleasure of following us early in the season we were not a playoff team. But, each game we got better. You saw kids start believing in what we were doing and trusting where we had them and what they were being asked to do. We understood that we could beat anyone if we stayed focused and played defense and that eventually we were going to hit you. We had great pitching and catching from Rynn Norris and Ashley Grissom all year. Great power hitting from Carissa Zarate and Sarah Slayton and tremendous defense from Jessica Morales and Erin Strickland, our speed came through time after time on the field and in the box from Mecedes Taylor, Miranda Slone and Katelynn McKinnon and our bench came through when called upon in Courtney Brown, Miranda Brooks, Autum White and Shelby Slone. We had different people every game step up and make plays and come through in big moments and I think that is a key to anyone’s success in sports.

Our playoff run was exciting and was like a soap opera” As The Call Goes”. The excitement, the highs, the lows, and the verbal war between coaches and official made for a very exciting series. I know everyone wants to talk about a few calls but I choice to talk about the class and composure that these young ladies showed in an extremely pressured situation. When fans, coaches and umpires were going crazy they maintained focus and fought. Our team did all the things it needed to do to win a series and they did it the right way. I am so proud of them and how far we came this year. We are District Champs, Area Champs and Regional Quarters Qualifiers. What a great season, what a great group of young ladies, that’s what I will remember.

Thanks for all your support this season.
Coach Tracy Dawson

4/29/2010
The Coleman Boys 5th & 6th grade basketball team is continuing to play with good results. The boys participated in the Prime Time Tournament held at Abilene Wylie earlier this month and finished in 2nd place after a hard fought game against Huckabay which went into overtime with a final score of 41-38. This brings the team’s record to 18-3, winning first place in the Brownwood and Early Tournaments, and winning the consolation brackets of the Brookesmith (after forfeiting their initial game due to schedule conflicts) and Dublin (after losing to Lipan) tournaments. The team plans to keep playing throughout the summer months.

Due to an overlap with baseball season, there are a couple of new faces on the team. Coaches Cody Norris and Jeff Hammonds appreciate all the boys and parents and their dedication and desire to play. Congratulations and keep up the hard work!

Ryan Martin wins 1st in Golf at Regionals

COLEMAN HIGH SOPHOMORE BRINGS HOME REGION TITLE
4/22/2010
Ryan Martin, a CHS Sophomore, captured the Region 1-AA Golf Championship on Tuesday with a 4 under par total of 140 for the two day tournament. The event, held at Odessa’s Ratliff Ranch Golf Links, was contested in the shadow of the “Friday Night Light inspiring” Ratliff Stadium. Ryan worked a little “Mojo” of his own in climbing back from a self-inflicted 4 over par start on the first two holes. From that point on, though, he was firing on all cylinders. Over the final 34 holes of the event, Martin was an impressive 8 under par and made three clutch birdies down the stretch to secure the win.

Region 1 is a tough region to get out of, and the 2010 edition was no different. 4 players finished the event under par, and only 3 of them earned trips to Austin. Sonora’s Word Hudson and Alpine’s Ryder Skillern tied for 2nd at 142 with Hudson winning the sudden death playoff. Hudson advances to state along with the Sonora team, while Skillern heads to Austin in the 2nd Medalist slot. Wall, a strong area team, finished 2nd and will be heading to Austin as well. Garrett Smith of Wall posted an even par 144 to lead the Hawks.

Merkel’s Austin Hilburn fired an opening round 68 to take the early lead, but finished with a 78 on Day 2 to finish out of the running for a state berth. Muleshoe’s Tyson Turnbow, scorched the course on Tuesday with a 67, but found himself 1 shot out of a playoff for the 2nd place slot. His opening 76 proved to be too much to overcome.

The Bluecats team wrapped up a strong season with a 12th place finish in the team standings. CHS posted a 2-day total of 681, only 3 shots out of the top 10. CHS team scores were as follows:

Ryan Martin                 70    70    140
Garrett Mendoza          80    89   169
Johnnie (Trey) Casey   89    97   186
Andrew Isom               96    93    189
Brodie Tibbitts             93    99   192

The AA State Tournament will be held on May 10-11 on Austin’s Roy Kizer Golf Course.

SANTA ANNA COACH SELECTED TO COACH ALL-STARS BASKETBALL GAME
4/8/2010
Contributed

Santa Anna varsity girls’ coach Bob Libby has been selected to coach the All-stars in the Texas Six Man’s Coaches Association basketball game this summer which will be played at Lubbock in July. Coach Libby has been coaching for 30 years and has been the Santa Anna girls’ coach for the past six seasons.

For the most part, the Lady Mountaineers and Coach Libby have been a very good mix. Santa Anna has accumulated an overall record of 131 victories and only 64 losses over the past six years. Santa Anna has won a minimum of 20 games in four of those six seasons. The Lady Mountaineers have been district champs twice, as well as two-time district runners-up. In his first two seasons, Santa Anna placed third. In the 2008-09 season Santa Anna advanced to the regional quarterfinals and were eliminated by eventual state champion Roby. This past season, a very young team was the most successful team to date in terms of victories with a record of 28-6. They were eliminated in the bi-district round.

During his tenure he has coached one All-State selection, four All-Region picks, and numerous All-District players. There have been three girls that have represented Santa Anna in the All-Star game. This overall success has been a major reason in his selection as an All-Star Coach.
