ATPE Regional Meeting Held in
Coleman
12/31/2006
Coleman County
Association of Texas Professional Educators held a Region XV
meeting recently at Hidalgos Restaurant in Coleman. Sarah
Beal, Region XV President, presided over the business
meeting. Amy White and Kathy Lanfer, from the state office,
presented a power point presentation on Political
Involvement Training and gave a Legislative Update.
Educators from Ballinger, Coleman, and San Angelo School
Districts attended the meeting. Door prizes were given to
several lucky attendees. Shown in the picture are Amy White,
Sarah Beal, Cindy Dean, Cindy Jamison, Cheryl Buchannon,
Judy Steele, and Darlene Kelly. Beal, Buchannon, Steele, and
Kelly serve as region officers. Sarah Beal and Cindy Dean
will represent the Coleman County local unit in January for
ATPE Lobby Day in Austin.
Wheelchair Basketball Game Big
Success
12/31/2006
A crowd estimated
at close to 200 attended a fundraiser Saturday afternoon in
the old high school gym. It was a wheelchair basketball game
to raise money for a women's wheelchair team from the DFW
area. One of the team members is Amy Simmons, a graduate of
CHS. There aren't many women's wheelchair basketball teams
in the country, only around 13 we were told. Travel to and
from games is expensive for the team and they don't have a
sponsor. In talking to one of the ladies who helped form the
team in 1989, not only do they have travel expenses but the
specialized wheelchairs need repair from time to time and
that costs money.
After
it was all said and done, over $1,000 was raised for the
team and lots of laughs were enjoyed by the audience. In the
photos, Amy goes over some pre-game rules with Dr. Paul
Reynolds. Later on, Buster Hensley was fouled and sent to
the free throw line (that's Coach Barbara Cox looking on).
Even though he missed the shot, Buster got hot later in the
game and made several points. Shooting basketballs from a
wheelchair is harder than you may think but Amy's team made
it look easy. Thanks to everyone who attended.
Good News - Bill Franklin Center is
Paid For
12/29/2006 (submitted by Sarah Beal)
The Bill Franklin
Community Center is now completely paid for and the barn
account has $282,000 towards the barn phase of the Youth
Activity Center. Pledges are needed for the barn so plans
can be made as to how big the barn will be and what can be
included in the barn. Building material prices continue to
rise, so the longer it takes to get the money for
construction, the more expensive the barn gets.
The Center is a busy place these days. Some of the events
and activities at the center include: 4-H Shooting Sports,
Dove Fest, Mozelle School Homecoming, Cattlewomen’s
Christmas Ball, FFA District Banquet, 4-H Awards Banquet,
CHS Class of 1966 reunion, Deer Hunter’s Appreciation BBQ
supper, Wildlife Committee meetings, Rodeo Association
meetings, Jr. Rodeo Association meeting, 2 Quinceaneras,
Community Wide Thanksgiving service, several Christmas
parties, Coleman County Livestock Show meeting, 4-H Foods
project meetings, First Baptist Youth meeting, 4-H
Poinsettia delivery and several other activities. Many of
these events use "Free Days” from our generous supporters.
Expenses add up to over $28,000 per year for utilities and
insurance. These expenses are met with rental fees and
donations. Most of the donations are now going to the barn
account as requested by the donors.
The CCYAC board received a Friend of 4-H Award from the
Coleman County 4-H Clubs. The plaque now proudly hangs in
the front foyer.
There are seven more rocks for sale on the “Wall of Honor”.
If you are interested in purchasing one of the rocks to
honor your family, business, etc., you should contact Henry
Dodson at Coleman County State Bank at 325-625-2172.

Snyder Woman Involved in Wreck
12/18/2006
A 21 year-old
college student from Snyder, traveling to Austin, was
involved in a one-vehicle roll-over wreck at approximately
11:00am Monday eight miles north of Coleman on U.S. Highway
84.
According to Chris Delgado, investigating D.P.S. Trooper,
Adriana Rodriguez-Martinez was driving south on 84 in a 1990
blue Honda Civic 4-door when she ran off the road to the
right, swerved left, then swerved right again where she ran
through a fence and overturned one time. She was wearing her
seatbelt and refused medical transport at the scene.
With her trip cut short, she was treated to some
old-fashioned Coleman hospitality having a stew and
cornbread lunch at the fire station with Trooper Delgado and
members of the Coleman Fire Department who responded to the
call. As of early afternoon, she was waiting at the fire
department for her family to arrive from Snyder, Delgado
said.

What is a Juried Show? Part II
12/16/2006
(Note:
This is the second part of a series written by Marian
Johnson about the Juried Art Show being held for the first
time next year in Coleman. Part one is further down the
page)
The Mission Statement of the Fine Arts League sponsored
"Juried Show-Flight of the Dragonflies", is to further the
arts and increase interest with a "new" kind of fine art
exhibition (for Coleman) - to reach for new goals. One of
the important targets for the FALCC is to expose our youth
to the value and pleasure of creating art of all kinds.
With the many talented artists in Coleman County, it is
important to challenge each of them to new skills and
encourage creativity. The 2007 Show "Juried" aspect will be
the type of event appealing to artists nationwide. So far,
we have had 15 out-of-state requests for show entry
information and many from Texas.
The Juried Show in 2007 will be entry by digital photos
(instead of and in place of slides). These images can be
submitted via email or mailed to Coleman on a CD. The
digital photos will then be "judged" by a panel of three
competent, well-know artists - 1 from Colorado and 2 from
Texas = Selection Panel. Deadline for entry is February 16,
2007.
fineartsleague@Yahoo.com
Once the Selection Panel artists compile their decisions and
return them to the Exhibit Chairpersons, the paintings being
chosen or "juried in" to the show, will be notified. At that
point, the chosen paintings will be either shipped or
hand-delivered to Coleman to hang at the Franklin Center.
The Awards Judge, Ann Templeton (New Mexico), will then come
to judge the work for the Awards to be given.
Anyone wishing to enter but needing help with the digital
aspect, should contact their local photographer, or
Show-chairpersons Marian Johnson, 325-357-4775
mljdj@web-access.net
or Virginia Bethke 325-625-2291

New Downtown Eatery Attracts The
Lunch Crowd
12/15/2006
Roast, meatloaf,
chicken and dumplings, sandwiches, soups and salads are the
items bringing the lunch crowd to
The
Lunch Box at 406 South Colorado. Geneva Harris and daughter
Teresa Smith opened the business October 1st and it has
turned into a handy place for workers in the downtown area
and those that just love good home-cooked meals.
Painted bright yellow, the restaurant is located in a cozy
wooden house. Plenty of hard work went into the renovation.
Old wallpaper was removed down to the original boards. To
add a special touch, barn tin is on the
ceiling as you enter. Geneva formerly operated an antique
store in town so it is not surprising that you'll find
antiques throughout the restaurant.
The Lunch Box is open Tuesday through Friday from 11:00am
until 2:00pm.
Reading Program Pays-Off for Junior
High Students
12/15/2006 (contributed by Bridget Wakefield)
Wow! Today was
exciting and profitable for kids at Coleman Jr. High. Mrs.
Ringo, the Junior High Principal, held a drawing today for
gift certificates to Wal-Mart. The gift certificates were
provided by Margie Lee, Coleman’s representative from the
Reading Coach Corporation. Reading Coach is the new reading
program that CISD has instituted that is a broad based
reading program providing ground breaking results. The gift
certificates were provided by Mrs. Lee as a well deserved
reward for the students’ hard work.
Mrs. Burkey, Dean of Students, presented the awards in a
format that resembled the game show, “Let’s Make a Deal!”
This made the event extremely exciting for the entire
student body. As winning names were drawn from the basket,
Mrs. Burkey would offer them a deal. The winners were given
the option of not taking the gift certificate of lower
denomination and putting their name back into the hopper for
the drawing for the larger denomination certificates or to
take the money and run! None of the kids were willing to
“deal” with Mrs. Burkey. They happily took the money and
ran. Mrs. Wakefield, the Reading Coach teacher, presented
$15 gift certificates to Garrett Stuard, Andrea Goodman, and
Chris Diaz. Shelby Diaz, Bo Crowder, and Clint Coleman won
$25 gift certificates, and the big winners of the $50 gift
certificates were Bryan Lucas, Tonja Irwin, and Hayle
Eschenbacher.

Juried Art Show Coming to Coleman -
What's That?
12/11/2006 (by Marian Johnson)
With any "thing or
event" that is different or new, comes questions, doubts,
what-ifs, etc. So, the same can be said for the "NEW" kind
of art show to be hosted in April 2007 by the Fine Arts
League of Coleman County. Information always clears minds
and helps with understanding.
The fine art show in October during the Fiesta de la Paloma
is termed an "Open Show". This simply means it is " open" to
all entries of fine art of any subject (in good taste)as
long as it meets the criteria set out by the Fiesta Show
committee. All media are accepted with the exception of
photography, computer generated art, and sculpture. The
entries are categorized according to the medium and the
abilities of the artist : ie. Oil, pastel/graphics,
watermedia in Professional, Advanced, Amateur, and Youth
Classes. These are the only restrictions in an Open Show.
The Judge then "judges" the exhibit and makes the Awards
according to his/her expertise and knowledge of Art. The
Fiesta Show has been most successful with its 16th annual
show just completed in October, 2006.
Many have stated that it is very difficult to win a prize in
the Fiesta Show because the work is on par with the juried
shows in the area (Brownwood, Breckenridge and others) . It
is a wonderful venue for all kinds of art and artists. Thus,
the reason for beginning a new kind of show - "Juried Show"
- Coleman’s first to be at the Bill Franklin Center in 2007.
(To be Continued next week)

Barbara Wins a Bug
12/9/2006
The Coleman County
Youth Football Association would like to thank everyone
participating in the Bluecat Bug Raffle. Your generosity
helped the association raise right at $5,000.
The Bluecat Bug was generously donated by Rowdy Allen's
family, the body work and Bluecat "blue" paint job was
donated by Saverance Body Shop while the Bluecat decals were
donated by Screen Art Graphics, owned by Lee Wayne West and
Richard Hensley.
A small crowd gathered in front of the courthouse with the
"Christmas red" tickets rolling in the Chamber's hopper.
Last-minute tickets were purchased by several standing
around and a little past 5:00 pm a little girl from the
crowd was asked to draw out the lucky ticket number and the
winner was (drum roll please) Barbara Hubbard!
In the photo of the Bluecat
Bug is Barbara and son, Troy. "Looks like 13 year old Troy
has his first car," Barbara said laughingly. We don't
know whether husband/dad, Drew, is laughing or crying.

Gouldbusk Club Holds Meeting
12/2/2006
The Gouldbusk
Homemakers Club met in the home of Mike and Lynn Corbett on
November 9th at 1:30pm. members present were Lynn Corbett,
Geneva Garrett, Dean Lanier, Virginia Jamison, Danella Mc
Brayer, Pat Pool, Sue Ragsdale, Vicki Stewart and Berva Dawn
Taylor. Presenting the program on healthy cooking was Debbie
Hailey, our county extension agent. During roll call we each
related a memorable experience we had had during the last 12
months. We had a lively discussion regarding the upcoming
events we would be sponsoring, including the holiday fair
scheduled for November 11th at the Catholic Church Parish
hall and the Gouldbusk Community Thanksgiving Dinner we
would be hosting on November 19th. After the business
meeting was concluded we received a talk and handouts from
Debbie Hailey, then she proceeded to prepare a Grilled Lemon
Chicken Fiesta Salad. We got to eat it too and it was
delicious, along with the scones Lynn had prepared. The
meeting ended about 4:30. I think everyone had a really good
time. We will be having our annual Christmas party next
month at the home of Berva Dawn Taylor on December 14th at
1:30pm. We would love to have anyone in the community who
would like to join us come to our meetings. They are always
a lot of fun. Submitted by Lynn

Dear Editor
12/1/2006
The Coleman County
Chamber of Commerce, Agriculture and Tourist Bureau is in
the process of our principal annual fundraiser. We want the
public to know that your support in the past has been great.
We liked the way it was in the past. We gave away a pick-up
as well as other prizes, but we found out part of what we
were doing could have been illegal, so we had to change it
up some. This year we’re giving away a Ford mustang only,
which is legal in every respect.
This letter is a plea to the community to support us in this
effort. We’re a non-profit organization. We don’t need to
make a profit. All we want to do is break even at the end of
year. In order for us to break even and not reduce services
to the community. We need about one thousand dollars per
month additional funding. If we meet our goal, through your
support in this fundraiser we will raise the additional
funds necessary.
Thanks,
Gene C. Christian
