Ranger recounts the
Death of Bone Wilson
12/26/2007 (story by Laurie Moseley)
Editor's Note: Recently,
Coleman city councilman Rodney Cole ran across a
newspaper article, the November 21 edition of The
Springtown Epigraph in Springtown, Texas.
The article contains information about Coleman County,
told by legendary Texas Ranger, Noah Armstrong. We have
received permission from the author of the story, Laurie
Moseley, to run it for our readers. Thanks to
Rodney for bringing this to our attention.
In 1938 Noah Armstrong
told about his time as a Texas Ranger. "When I joined
the Rangers in 1876 my company was stationed at Pecan
Springs in Runnels County. Our captain got orders to
look out for one Bone Wilson, an outlaw who had killed
the sheriff of Erath County. Captain Sparks took us out
to scout around and look for him. Finally, we struck his
trail in the Santa Anna Mountains and trailed him across
the Colorado River through Salt Gap and on by Rock
Springs. We lost his trail there and could not pick it
up again.
"After several days we heard of a mysterious bunch
around Snyder. Captain Sparks took five of us and
started out. We came upon a big plum thicket, some 10-15
acres, and as we went around it investigating as best we
could, we saw a new trail leading to the interior.
"We were sure this was the place; so we started single
file down the long narrow path. When we rode upon them,
a cousin and brother of the outlaw were making coffee
and roasting buffalo meat over a campfire. They gave up
readily and told us that Bone had gone out to kill a
buffalo. We hoped for as good luck with him as there was
a $1,500 reward on his head. We had always rather bring
them back alive, if possible, and he had boasted that he
would never be taken alive. Captain Sparks left three
boys with the prisoners and took the other fellows and
me with him. We picked our way back to the outside and
he stationed us around the entrance, telling us to wait
until he had called, halt! and if he didn't surrender
then, to shoot his horse from under him and he was sure
that would make him give up.
"We had about an hour to wait before we saw him come
riding up with a sack of meat and two buffalo hides on
his horse. 'Halt! Halt! Halt!' shouted our captain, and
with the first sound, Wilson's buffalo gun went to his
shoulder as he pulled the trigger. He would have killed
one or all of us if a bullet had not hung in the gun. As
he did that we shot his horse from under him, but
instead of giving up he fell down behind his horse and
pulled his two six-shooters, firing as we shot him. The
other three boys were told to take their prisoners to
jail while we got some conveyance to carry Wilson's body
back to Erath County for our reward.
"We got a wagon and some harness and used our own horses
alternately on the long trip back. We put the body in
the wagon bed and piled mesquite bushes over him and
started about sundown. We traveled all that night, all
next day and part of the next night before we got to
Coleman; there were no roads nor bridges and not many
trails, we just had to take a course through the woods
and do the best we could. One man was sent on ahead on
horseback to select the best crossings on streams and he
would often have to go up and down a stream for hours
before a place could be found for a wagon to cross.
"Just before we got to town we had to cross a little
draw and the moon was just bright enough for the Indians
to be out. We were leading our spare horses and pack
mule and when two big rusty Indians sprang from the
bushes with knives in hand to cut the horses loose we
let 'em have it. This brought several arrows from bushes
all around us but no one was hurt by them and all the
Indians ran except the dead one.
"We went on into Coleman about 10:30p.m., exchanged our
wagon for a hack, which was a much lighter vehicle, got
a few hours sleep, some black coffee and bacon and
started on before daylight for Erath County. We reached
Stephenville, turned the body over to the authorities
and received our reward. The state had offered $500
while the citizens had donated $500 and a section of
land. This was rightfully divided and one of our boys,
Gus Young who fell heir to the land, still lives on it
and has done well.

Texas Ranger Hall of Fame in Waco, Texas.
Noah Armstrong joined the Texas Rangers in 1876, serving
until 1878. After leaving the Rangers, he settled in
Coleman, Texas. He married B. Alice Fullerton of Dawson
in 1878.
The Armstrong's were the
parents of three sons and three daughters.
In a 1955 interview by Rangers Doyle Curington and Max
Westerman, Armstrong recalled that after being
discharged from the Rangers, he engaged in the saloon
business. After marriage, his wife objected to the
nature of his business. He sold the saloon and purchased
a sheep and horse ranch.

Noah Armstrong on one of Ralph and Judia Terry's

Residence Destroyed by
Fire Saturday Night
12/23/2007
The walls are standing
but the inside and roof of the Pat Hill home at 512
Martin St. in Coleman are gone and the house is a total
loss.
The Coleman Fire
Department arrived Saturday night to find fire leaping
from the structure and spreading through the home.
Firemen saved a mobile home behind the house and also
kept the fire from spreading to other houses such as
next door neighbor, Tom Mann. The good news is the
residents were able to escape unharmed and were put up
in a local motel for the rest of the night.
According to Gary Payne with the Coleman Fire
Department, the possible cause of the fire was a BBQ pit
which blew over up against the house and caught it on
fire. The fire department kept personnel at the
residence all night to put out hot spots and areas that
flared up again.
The fire department still
had a truck at the scene at 10:00am Sunday.
Humbug
12/23/2007
The Coleman Police
Department has received numerous reports of criminal
mischief around town involving Christmas decorations.
Yard decorations have either been stolen or damaged the
past couple of days on North Nueces, Sunrise Lane, N.
Frio, E. 5th, Hillcrest and San Marcos. There were
also two calls concerning fights Saturday night.

The Humane Society appreciates all those who
participated by purchasing tickets. The money collected

our temporary holding pen on Santa Anna Avenue!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! And thank you so
very much for making our first month at the Thrift Store
such a wonderful success and such a pleasant experience.
Coleman Police on
Extra Patrol this Holiday Season
12/23/2007
The Coleman Police
Department will participate in a state-wide traffic
enforcement program this Christmas / New Year holiday
season.
The Selective Traffic
Enforcement Program (STEP), that is financed through a
grant from the Texas Department of Transportation, pays
off-duty police officers across the state to work
specific traffic enforcement. Officers will be looking
for motorists who violate the State's speed laws, seat
belt and child restraint laws, and drunk drivers (DWIs).
The Coleman Police Department will be out in
force from December 21, 2007 through January 1, 2008.
This program is a win - win situation for the City of
Coleman, as the state pays the Police Officers and the
City receives the citation revenue. Chief of Police Jay
Moses and his staff have worked very hard to qualify the
Coleman Police Department for this program.
Officers of the Coleman
Police Department wish everyone a happy and safe
Christmas, so watch the posted speed signs and remember
the slogan "Click It or Ticket".
Military Appreciation
Sending my appreciation,
love and blessings to all Coleman County service persons
this Holy Christmas season. It is because of you that we
are free to celebrate our Lord's birth in the manner we
Christians are accustomed. Thanks for your dedication
and love of country, and may the Lord bless and be close
to you at this time, at home or far away.
Mrs. Johnson, Coleman County Chairperson for the
Military.
Airport Board
Appointed by City Council
12/22/2007
Five men were approved
Thursday by the Coleman City Council to serve on the new
Aiport Advisory Board. They will meet and make
recommendations to city management on ways to improve
the local airport. Named to one year appointments were
Ross Jones, Cecil Day and Randy Turner. Named to a two
year appointment were James Wright and John Vance.
The Council approved a resolution authorizing the City
to engage in a joint seal-coat project with other area
cities as coordinated through Enprotec/Hibbs & Todd,
Inc. According to Bob Ray, Public Works Director, this
is a multiple city seal-coat project which would be a
non-binding agreement for the City of Coleman. By
participating in the program, the City could save 30 to
50 percent on seal coating streets and roadways. The
City's responsibility will be to get the roads ready for
coating.
The Council approved a recommendation from the Coleman
Economic Development Corporation to approve a
Performance Agreement with Leon Valley, Inc. which
involves the addition of no fewer than 10 jobs and the
retention of these jobs for the next 24 months. In
exchange for the new positions, the EDC is funding
$15,000 in new welding equipment.
Mayor Nick Poldrack was authorized to sign a vendor
agreement with Central Texas Opportunities for the
Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program.
The Council approved a request from the Coleman County
Special Utility District to grant easements for the
purpose of laying water lines on city-owned property,
conditional that there is no cost to the city. They also
authorized the City Manager and City Attorney to work
with the water district staff to move the process
forward. Travis Rhoads, General Manager of the county
water district, said this is a worthwhile project and
will allow the City and Water District to collaborate
and work together.
Barnett’s Gather for
Christmas 2007
12/22/2007 (contributed)
First let me tell you
about “the continued stories”. As some of you have
guessed, Casey is our news
letter writer, that is most of the time. Thanksgiving,
she wasn’t here so I wrote the letter and did not finish
her store from July. Well, to coin a phrase, here is the
rest of that story: If you remember Daddy and Humpy was
looking for fire wood and found a dead limb in a tree.
They talked it over and decided to climb the tree and
cut the limb out, remember they were 9 or 10. Humpy
climbed the tree and couldn’t find a good place to stand
so he decided to stand on the limb and jump off before
it hit the ground. You guessed it he didn’t jump off in
time and almost broke his back when he landed with the
limb. Nothing was broken, only because God was looking
out for him.
Now to finish the story from Thanksgiving, if you
remember Daddy was singing the rhyming song about the
great big spider on the glass slipped and fell and hurt
her knee. One of the kids on the bus said “Claude, that
doesn’t rhyme”, at which point one of the teachers said
“it is a good thing it didn’t.” Now you know the rest of
both stories.
The Christmas celebration started on Friday the 14th.
Early, I know, but with so many needing to be somewhere
else you have to start early. Nell arrived about noon
and started unloading, food of course. Randall, Riley
and Jr. were only happy to help. Then came Claudia and
she started unloading bedding at our house where her
grandson, Randall, was slowly helping. I was finishing
up Nell’s Christmas ornaments and thawing out rolls for
sausage bread. We visited while I painted then rolled
out the dough and set it to rise. Then Randall called to
say it was time to eat, (he had been hunting) he did not
get a deer. So we all went to Hidalgo’s for supper. It
seems we always eat there when every one is coming;
there is plenty of room lots of good food and no dish
washing. After we ate we came home, cooked the bread and
took it to Randall’s and visited up into the night. Of
course some played “42” and could be heard complaining
about their partners. We left Randall’s about eleven and
got a phone call from Claudia’s daughter Beth; they were
bringing Amber tonight but were going back to
Burkburnett after dropping her off. They arrived about
two in the morning and all three fell onto the air
mattresses that we decided to get ready in case they
didn’t go back. Billy fixed breakfast for us here and
Randall fixed breakfast at his house. The men are real
good at fixing breakfast. After breakfast Beth and
Annette went back to Burkburnett, Claudia and her bunch
went to Randall’s, and I fixed my part of the dinner
here. Donna called to check on dinner time as she was
doing the Banana pudding, Riley was very happy. As you
can imagine there is a lot of food to cook and with one
stove and oven everyone fixes food and brings it in. The
menu was fried turkey, cornbread dressing, ham, rice and
broccoli casserole, potatoes, gravy, green bean
casserole, bread dressing, sweet rice and a green salad.
The desserts included pumpkin cake, banana pudding,
pecan pie, Jell-O jigglers, and all kinds of candy and
cookies. After the clean up, a blessing to whoever
invented disposables, there was more games and the wait
began for the opening of the gifts” as you can imagine
the little ones asked every two or three minutes when we
were going to open them and with that many little ones
running around it was a long wait. When Casey and Bucky
arrived the little ones followed her into the house as
we kept telling them “when Aunt Casey gets here” she
said it was kind of strange to have them all follow her
in and were quite. The little ones got in a circle and
waited for their gifts, opened them up and then out they
went to play. The older ones got in a circle and was
handed a wrapped package. Ricky read a story using the
words right and left frequently at which point the gift
you had went that direction. It was fun and did not last
all that long. The clean up began and some started home
or to other Christmas celebrations. By noon on Sunday
everyone was gone, the house was quite and Riley was
going to take a nap.
Those who came were; Nell Hopper, Janey Barnett, Chloe
and Sammy Portilo, Vince, Kelly, Aaron, and EmmaLee
Barnett, Casey and Bucky Lobstein all of Abilene. Marty
Hopper of Austin. Roland and Jean Barnett, Raemma,
Erikha, Preston, and Kyle Card of Silver Valley. Bo,
Carrie, Haley, and Brayden Barnett of Novice. Rolanda,
Rachel, and Tandra Barnett, R.J. and Addie Barnett, Cara
Barnett all of Brownwood. Glenn and Claudia Kemp,
Annette and Randall Priddis, Beth and Amber Boatman all
of Burkburnett. Donna and Richard Jr. of Wichita Falls.
Ray and Brenda Barnett of Bronte. Chad, Christy and
Brogan Barnett of Paint Rock. Randall Barnett, Riley
Barnett, Ricky, Joanne and Oren Barnett, Recce, Kathy
and Hope Barnett, Richard, Kelli. Zachary, Brandon and
Jacob Brown, Eric Lucas, Mary Bishop, Wanda Barnett,
Billy and Annie Brown all of Coleman.
By the grace of God all made it home safely and are
planning their on Christmas celebration. Marry Christmas
to all and until next time may God bless.

For All Our Animal
Loving Friends
12/17/2007
To be posted VERY LOW on
the refrigerator door - pet nose height.
Dear Dogs and Cats:
The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain
your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my
food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of
my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming
your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically
pleasing in the slightest.
The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a
racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object.
Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you
can run.
I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am
very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue
sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and
cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep.
It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other
stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also
know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues
hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing
but sarcasm.
For the last time, there is no secret exit from the
bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage
to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw,
whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under
the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit
through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using
the bathroom for years --canine or feline attendance is
not required.
The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog
or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough!
To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following
message on our front door:
To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About
Our Pets:
1. They live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay
off the furniture. That's why they call it 'fur'niture.
3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, they are an animal. To me, he/she is an
adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all
fours and doesn't speak clearly.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL
AND TO ALL—THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT THIS YEAR!

One of our

4-H Donates to City
Toy Drive
12/12/2007 (by Debbie Hailey)
The Coleman 4-H Club
sells poinsettias each year to raise money for the
City-Wide Toy Drive. On Thursday, December 6,
twenty-seven 4-H members and numerous parents gathered
at Alco to purchase toys for all age children throughout
Coleman County who might not otherwise have a very merry
Christmas.
The joy of giving was apparent as the 4-Hers went up and
down the aisles checking their lists twice, and
selecting over $500 worth of appropriate toys and gifts.
Jan Heath, Coleman 4-H Club Manager, made the
arrangements for the purchase and delivery of the
poinsettias. The club wishes to thank Colette Tabor, who
oversees the City-Wide Toy Drive project, for bringing
the joy of giving to 4-H members and the joy of
Christmas to children in our county. We appreciate all
of you who purchased poinsettias and made this effort
possible.
Thanks - From Holiday
Hill Nursing Home
12/12/2007 (submitted)
Holiday Hill Nursing Home
would like to thank everyone who donated stuffed
animals. The response was overwhelming. We received
stuffed animals from Abilene and Arlington as well as
many from Coleman County. We use them for a variety of
different things such as Bingo prizes, birthday gifts,
to help decorate rooms and beds or to just cheer up a
resident who is feeling down. The smile a little bear,
rabbit, monkey etc. can put on someone's face is
priceless. Our goal is to make our resident's as
comfortable and happy as we possibly can and we have
learned through the years that little things mean so
much. We will continue being thankful for every donation
that comes in.
Also, we are in need of costume jewelry that you might
have put away somewhere not knowing what to do with it.
As with the stuffed animals, a necklace, earrings or
bracelet can mean so very much to a resident. Christmas
is coming up and many family members will be coming to
see their loved ones. Our residents love to be dressed
up and looking nice for their children, grandchildren
etc. As with the stuffed animals, we will be glad to
pick it up. You can call Raylene at 325-636-7850 or call
325-625-4157 and ask for Norma or Charlotte.
Thank you for all of your support you have shown to our
Nursing Home and our residents throughout the years. May
God Bless Each of You and May You Have a Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year!

"Young at Heart -
Young at Art"
12/12/2007 (by Marian Johnson, FALCC)
These two young ladies
have come a long way toward their goals in art enhanced
by their participation in the Junior Art League (JAL) of
Coleman. The JAL group is sponsored by the Fine Arts
League of Coleman and hosted by Virginia Bethke and
Robin Black, League members.
Emma Dyer is in the Savannah School of Art and Design
and is already selling some of her work!
Addria Vasquez (Addy)
is a senior at Coleman High School with talent to spare.
Her paintings of animals, especially horses and dogs,
helped her walk away with Winning Ribbons in the Fiesta
de la Paloma Fine Art Show in October. Addy is also
having some sales of her work.
Someday, we can say we
knew these young artists when they were young at art and
hopefully still "young at heart". The Central
Texas Fine Art Museum on Commercial Avenue hosted a
reception and exhibit of the two artists' work Saturday.

is a Registered Massage Therapist and officially opens
his Coleman office with a ribbon cutting ceremony at
4:00pm today (Wed). The Coleman County Chamber of
Commerce invites everyone to stop by and join them. The

time in baseball opened many doors for him which has
helped in his massage therapy business. Clients include
country music singer Charley Pride, actor Esai Morales

New General Store to
Open in Coleman
early in '08
12/10/2007
Texas County General
Store Coleman will open in early 2008, according to
store owners Rodney and Ginger Spies (pronounced Speez).
You may not know Rodney and Ginger, yet, but they are
the same folks who own Mills County General Store in
Goldthwaite and have made it such a success over the
past several years.
The store location will be just west of the County
Courthouse, the old Rhone/Berry Hardware building. The
store will feature hardware, plumbing, Valspar paint,
lawn and garden, house wares and small appliances such
as coffee pots and gadgets, Wrangler jeans, Carhartt
outerwear, work boots, hunting and fishing supplies from
Bass Pro, Lodge and other outdoor cookware. A
bridal registry is planned and always free gift
wrapping.
"It's an old-fashioned general store with all the things
you need for your everyday life," is how the store is
described. Rodney says they hope to hire local
people so anyone with a retail background can contact
John Corbin who is on site most days getting the store
ready.
Once they open early next year, they will be open seven
days per week. Store hours will be 7:00am to 6:00pm
Monday through Saturday and 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sunday.
"We'll have things you haven't seen in forever and
things you've never seen," said Ginger. The Spies are
looking forward to getting to know the folks in Coleman
County.

of May, Texas has ridden two out of four bulls. But each
time he has ridden, he has won the round. He took Round
One, bucked off in Two and Three, then won Round Four
Sunday night.
J.W. has plenty of local relatives in Coleman County
pulling for him.
You can watch J.W. and
your other favorite rodeo contestants each night at
11:00pm on ESPN2 all this week. Many, if not most of
them at the finals, competed at the Coleman PRCA Rodeo

Two Authors to Visit
Coleman Elementary School Thursday
12/5/2007 (by Glynda Phillips)
Dave and Pat Sargent,
authors from Prairie Grove, Arkansas, will be speaking
to the elementary students in the CHS auditorium
at 9:00 Thursday morning.
After the presentation, they will be in the K-8 library
to sell/autograph books, photos & bookmarks.
Dave grew up in the small farming community of Prairie
Grove. He has been a dairy farmer, yogurt entrepreneur
and very successful author/publisher. Pat, a former
teacher, was born and raised in Oklahoma. She is also a
successful author. Both Dave and Pat write adventure and
animal books that inform, entertain and encourage good
citizenship. Our library owns many of their books and
they are among the most well loved books that we have.
We would like to invite the public to come and hear
these two speak, then purchase books if desired. An
autographed book really makes a wonderful Christmas
gift.
Fine Arts League Gets
in the Christmas Spirit
12/5/2007 (by Marian Johnson, publicity chairman)
Fine Arts League member, Ginger Test, provided an
atmosphere for a truly "Christmas feeling" with her
annual Christmas Party at her home/studio in Novice.
Guests and friends who have taken workshop classes from
Ginger came from far and near. Artists from San Angelo,
Abilene, Ballinger, Winters, Austin, Alpine and Coleman
were greeted with the holiday special at the Tests'
party - hot tamales and taco soup and wassail. Guests
provided a wonderful variety of side dishes, salads, and
desserts. Good place to exchange recipes!
Ginger
Test is the head cook for the Annual Party as
well as an organizer extraordinaire along with husband,
Terry. The party gave the feeling that Christmas is the
season for friends to meet and share.
Fine Arts League Christmas party will be at 6:00pm
Thursday, Dec. 13, at the First Coleman National Bank
Bldg. club room. Bring a dish to share, a small gift
($10) to exchange, an item for the Loaves & Fishes food
pantry. Guests are welcome.
Letter to the Editor
12/5/2007
I wish to take this
opportunity to say THANKS to all the young men who led
us "once weres" through the gambit of emotions this past
season. Those that love football will understand the
emotional roller coaster one experiences because of you
young men. Us old "once weres" days have long passed us
by. Without you, we only have the fading memories to
hold on to. You young men help brighten those memories
by allowing us to be a small part of the team. All we
can now do is grab hold of your shirt tail and hang on
for the ride and what a ride it was. From the thrill of
victory to the agony of defeat you have given us such
pride and joy.
One day there will be a changing of the guards. You young men will take
our place and become the "once weres" and be
experiencing the same emotions we have felt. Your
children will be the young men who are teammates making
the faded emotions in you brighten as you hold on to
their shirt tails and hang on for the ride. I might add
when these days come you will be a lot better player
looking back than you actually were when you
played......trust me!
A special thanks goes to you seniors. For most of you, the football glory
days are over and the fading process will begin soon. I
promise you the game where it ended and all the hurt and
sorrow will grow dim, but stay deep in your soul. It
will remain quiet and buried until you experience the
ride as a "once were" holding on to the shirt tail of
your kid. When your kid experiences that last loss and
you see him come out of the locker room for the last
time with pain in his face and swollen eyes from crying
because his dream has just shattered, that is when the
long forgotten emotions will rise up and engulf you.
Then and only then will you understand us "ONCE WERES"
To borrow from the great Bob Hope.................THANKS
FOR THE MEMORIES OF 2007.
