Coleman School Board Officers Elected
5/23/2008

In a meeting Thursday night of the Coleman School Board, new member Mark Martinez was welcomed to the board.

The board proceeded to elect officers for the 2008-2009 school year and voted to retain the present officers. President is Dr. Mike Edington, Vice-President is Sue Sloan and Secretary is Viki Hambright.

The school board approved two teacher resignations, those being high school teacher Jennifer Short and junior high teacher Olivia Clardy.

The board hired Mandi Edington for employment at Coleman Elementary. A Howard Payne graduate, Edington is married to Zach Edington, elementary P.E. teacher.

The board approved the TEEG Grant as presented by high school principal Richard Holloway. The grant is a teacher incentive pay grant, applicable only to high school. If accepted by the Texas Education Agency, it will provide additional funds for teachers based on student performance at the end of the coming school year.

The board approved the low bidder for every maintenance supply item presented by Steve Evans. Superintendent Royce Young explained that all supplies are escalating in price, being driven by fuel prices. Other rising prices, such as cafeteria food costs, will dramatically affect the school budget for the coming year.

Lorrie Payne gave a report on TAKS scores, based only on preliminary reports that have been received. More information will be submitted as final reports become available over the summer.

Young told the board that, unless there were objections, there is a great need to replace deteriorating sidewalks at the high school. The project will be bid but preliminary estimates have been gathered, Young said. The sidewalks have sunk and broken up, causing hazards to those entering or leaving the building, as well as making it impossible to keep dirt and mud out of the building.

Local Entrepreneurs Unveil New Fire Ant Killing Product
5/21/2008 By Tammarrah Miles

Note: Rodney and Ginger Spies Own County General Store, downtown Coleman

Local men Rodney Spies and Syd Brooks teamed up to fight fire with fire - fire ants with electricity, that is.
Spies, who, along with his wife, Ginger, owns the Mills County General Store, said he was working at the store one day when Brooks came in some six years ago and purchased a strange collection of goods.  "A waffle iron, a timer, a heat lamp ... a bunch of weird stuff," Spies recalled, saying he couldn¹t help but ask Brooks what he was doing. Brooks told him then that he was working on something, but wasn¹t ready to share it yet. A couple weeks later, Brooks returned to the store with a box full of what looked like coffee grounds, Spies said.

The pair retreated to the back of the store, where Brooks revealed that the "coffee grounds" were actually dead fire ants. Brooks explained to Spies that he had created a sort of fire ant trap.
Fire ants are attracted to foods high in protein and fat, they said, and it takes only a small amount of energy - roughly 300 watts - to kill a fire ant.  Spies contacted an engineer friend of his, Alan Ables, who holds patents to certain military weapons, an epoxy paint for nuclear waste containers, etc. They met with Ables and soon after developed a first prototype of their ant trap.

Over the next couple years, they developed several prototypes, Spies said, eventually meeting with Bart Drees, the resident ant guru at Texas A&M, and then on to Fostoria, Ohio,  the base of Fostoria Industries.  They learned that fire ants are not attracted to electricity, as was previously thought, but to the ozone around electricity. They kept working on their product, aiming to create something that was environmentally safe, did not use a lot of energy, was essentially self-cleaning, turned itself off when disturbed, etc.

Finally, with Ables help, the final prototype was developed. Although Brooks and Ables are the recognized inventors, the patents on the devise and method of kill are held by Mills County technologies.  By studying natural behavior of the fire ant, they determined that some percentage of ants entering the device are affected and eventually die.  Since ants recover their dead, and the queen sends out replacement workers for those that died, more ants make their way into the device. After awhile, they said, the queen realized that she is losing too many workers and will leave the mound, which then essentially dies without her.

The first, completed unit was packaged in Goldthwaite, Spies said, but his wife added Schusters in Goldthwaite will be instrumental in future assembly and shipping facets. The unit¹s boxes come from Dan Hill Containers in Brownwood.

The AntAgonizer is intended to be used for residential purposes, Spies said, but added "bigger and better things are to come."  "This is a long-term solution," Ginger Spies said, "not a quick fix".   She added that because the electrical current is strong enough to kill the fire ants, but not so strong that it kills them on the spot, the ants walk out of the device and then die, keeping the device itself clean of ant bodies. The unit is on for seven seconds, then off for 20 minutes, Brooks explained. Even that small amount of time on works wonders, he said, adding he counted some 2,000 dead ants in a single teaspoon.

She reiterated the AntAgonizer is extremely green and safe, with absolutely no chemicals. It is ideal for those concerned about pesticides in water run off, those with immune system disorders or conditions, those with small children and/or pets, those with allergies and anyone concerned about the environment.

AntAgonizers went on sale Tuesday, exclusively at the Mills County and Coleman General Stores. Online orders will be taken in the near future.

Local Countywide Historic Commission Committees Appointed
"Help Wanted" (See Last Paragraph)

5/21/2008

New board members were welcomed and committee heads appointed at the Coleman County Historical Commission
(CCHC) meeting last Thursday evening at Heritage Hall.

Eric Joffrion, chairman of the Coleman County Historical Commission, welcomed four new interim board members shown below:

Tex Wright, a long time and valued member, was elected as vice-chairman of the local commission.

Following this vote, Joffrion gave a report on the Annual Historic Preservation Conference he attended May 1-3 in Corpus Christi. The conference focus was on Heritage Tourism and the trends toward traveling closer to home, a trend which has grown rapidly due to rising gas costs.
Goals stressed were: identifying your local heritage assets, then developing and marketing those assets.

Possible changes to the local commission’s bylaws to keep them current with the state commission’s mission were discussed, but the commission took no immediate action.

Committee assignments were made as follows: ‘History Appreciation’, Tex Wright; ‘Research & Markers’, Ron Owens (he already has one marker in progress for the Centennial School); ‘Finance & Budget’, Maxine Cope; ‘Endangered Properties’, James Winstead; ‘Publicity’, Sue Frizzell; ‘Heritage Tourism’, Roger Nelson; and ‘Executive’, Eric Joffrion.

Joffrion asked each of the committee heads to review their committee requirements and goals, then use those to both put the bylaws into perspective and to help develop a 5-year plan for the local commission.

Other items discussed were: the 2007 Annual Report and how the committees would relate to the 2008 report, finances, Coleman County and its relationship to the Texas Historical Commission (THC) trail maps, local archeology, local Black history, local Hispanic History, and more.

Silver Valley history will be the subject of the next program on June 5, location to be determined.

The next CCHC scheduled business meeting will be 7 p.m., June 17, at Heritage Hall.

Your local commission is asking for your help.
It is trying to identify all of the heritage assets in the county so that it can do its part to fulfill the THC’s statewide mission “To protect and preserve the state’s historic and prehistoric resources for the use, education, enjoyment and economic benefit of present and future generations”. If you know of a local heritage asset that is not being recognized or utilized or that is in danger of being lost, please go to the next business meeting and tell them about it.

5/21/2008

 T
he Gala Dinner/Art Preview/Artist’s Demonstration Saturday evening May 10, at the Bill Franklin Center, proved to be a fun, informative occasion with many out of town guests attending.

Robin Black was chair of the gala with Fine Arts League members helping out. The meal, catered by “Sarah’s Dressing Up”, was just that. The ladies and the gents put on their best attire to attend the Gala, a first for the 2nd of Fine Arts League of Coleman County Juried Art Show. Close to 100 local and out of town artists and friends of the arts enjoyed the food and the fellowship and the art.

The funds for the purchase of the gallery system and installation were provided by the Friends of the Foundation Grant. Gary Patterson, Santa Anna Wood Works craftsman, created the special molding for the hanging hooks. Terry Langley, local master carpenter, finished and installed the molding. We are fortunate to have these skilled craftsmen in our County.

Tom Lockhart, Colorado artist, presented a watercolor demonstration of a scene in Coleman County for the guests. The painting was sold in silent auction. Tom was the Juror for the 2008 Sesquicentennial Juried Art Show and led a 2-1/2 day workshop.

14th Annual World Championship Bison Cook-off is in the Books
5/20/2008

Santa Anna’s 14th Annual World Championship Bison Cook-off saw twenty-five teams throw down their best efforts on Saturday, May 17. The teams came from west of Odessa and east of Waco, from north of Snyder and south of San Antonio, and they grilled everything from chicken to buffalo brisket before the awards ceremony wrapped up the Stanley Dodge World Championship Bison Cook-off late Saturday afternoon under the Entertainment Pavilion.

For all their efforts, the twenty-five teams took home $4500 in prize money. The $500 First Place money for Bison Brisket went to new-comer Jason Bell’s team, the Ringers, from San Angelo, edging out John Nauman from Bruceville, who kissed his $400 second-place check.

Local wood-burners Mel Pollock, Tim Perry, David Huggins, and first-timer Ross Bradley all took prize money, but another first-timer, Marilyn Huggins stole the limelight by winning the county beef brisket bragging rights. The Circle C Cattlewomen of Coleman County sponsored the 3-foot tall trophy—handed off by last year’s winner, Henry Balencia-- and the $250 prize money for Best Beef Brisket in Coleman County.

Several familiar faces made the walk to the winner’s table. Former Bison Champions Colby Caton from Abilene and Bobby Sanders of Forest hill were 1-2 in the ribs category. Perennial favorite Dickie Cooper from Stamford topped the beef brisket cookers. West Texas Barbecue Association President, Johnny Murray, of Odessa had a great day, placing in every category. This gave Murray enough total points to seize the Overall Points Championship and an extra $200. In addition, since the event is an official State Championship, Johnny is eligible for an invitation to the American Royal Invitational in Kansas City and the Jack Daniel’s Invitational in Tennessee.

The large crowd, estimated at over 5000, benefited from the efforts of some of the best cookers in the Southwest, passing through a serving line at lunch set up under the Armory oaks. Visitors were dished up plate lunches of buffalo meat and all the trimmings, while all around them, the Armory grounds played host to everything from arts and crafts vendors to horseshoe pitching, coed softball, and beach volleyball

8th Grade Science Classes Launch Rockets
5/19/2008

The 8th grade classes of Mr. Gary Strickland launched home-made rockets this past week. The skill that the students are learning is how to identify a design problem and propose a solution. The students made two rockets; the first rocket was made with little instruction (that is a good way to ensure design flaws). In the following week, the students reviewed Newton’s three laws of motion and studied how the variables of mass, center of pressure, and center of gravity affect the flight characteristics of a rocket. The students used a rocket simulator and their laptops to investigate the relationship between variables and the effect of changes in their rocket design on those variables. They then made new rockets that incorporated new design modifications and launched them on Friday. The students did a fine job. You can tell by the photos that being outside and playing with rockets, as well as the prospect of getting wet is not a bad way to finish the school year.

Kelly Spinks Band Injured in Wreck
5/19/2008 (contributed)
I need everyone in my community to keep my cousin, Joe, and his band members in your thoughts and prayers today. My cousin is a band member with Kelly Spinks and The Miles of Texas Band. If you have been to one of their shows, then you know how great they are and why they need every prayer possible.

Early Saturday morning, coming back from a show in San Antonio, the band's Tahoe hit a black cow which caused their trailer, carrying all of their equipment, to flip and catch fire. Some equipment was saved but most was a total loss.

Joe, Kelly, Mikey, Rooster and Pat were all injured.

Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. If you would like to keep updated please feel free to contact me at judi_williams_72@yahoo.com.

I would love to help my cousin and his band in any way possible. I am setting up a fund drive to help replace their equipment and assist with the huge medical cost. All I am asking for is your thoughts and prayers, but if you would like to give back to our entertainers please feel free to donate anything you can. At this time I have nothing set up, but I can get an address where funds can be sent or you can drop them off at my office at 605 W. 2nd St. Coleman, TX. 76834

God Bless and Thank you for your prayers,
Judi Schultz

Major Wreck Near Hords Creek Lake Injures Three
5/15/2008

A two vehicle accident late Thursday morning a few miles west of Coleman on State Highway 153 sent three people to the hospital. The wreck occurred just east of the main entrance to Hords Creek Lake in a road construction zone. Details were sketchy at the scene and a DPS Trooper from Runnels County had just arrived shortly before noon to begin his investigation. The driver of the white car is thought to have hit the driver of the pickup. Two people in the pickup were taken to the hospital in unknown condition. The lady driving the white car is thought to be from Winters with local relatives in Coleman. She was later flown by helicopter to another area hospital. A second helicopter also left from the local hospital early this afternoon. The Coleman County Sheriff's Office, Coleman Fire Department, Coleman Police Department, Coleman County Medical Center ambulance personnel and TxDOT workers assisted at the scene.

According to DPS, 63 year old Bobbie Butts slammed into the back of a pickup driven by 25 year old Walter Lee Wright Jr. Butts was air-lifted to a San Angelo hospital with serious injuries. Walter and his passenger are both in the Coleman County Medical Center.

Nearly 150 people gathered from all across Texas, uniting their efforts in the fight against cancer.

This year’s Special Guest was Victor J. Hirsch, M.D. and wife Sherry, of Hendrick Health System of Abilene Texas. Dr. Hirsch spoke about some of the latest developments in cancer research. Hirsch, said cancer is not just one disease, but many, and that there are over 200 different kinds of cancers. He said that there won’t be just one cure, but many .

After Dr. Hirsch spoke, the cancer walk honored guest, Connie Griffis McKee Whitney, spoke about the challenges she faced when dealing with cancer . Connie said she had done all of the right things, such as getting annual mammograms, however this type of cancer did not show up on a mammogram.

Whitney said the tremendous prayers and support she got from her family and friends, sustained her during this challenging time, and helped her to overcome.

Brown thanks everyone who attended and reported that they raised over $4,000. Proceeds goes to the Immediate Care Service and Scholarship Fund.

A FIREFIGHTER
So as you look at the firefighter with his rake, hose or axe,
His beet red face or ice covered mustache,
You should know why he goes through that smoky front door,
And is forced to crawl like a baby down on the floor.
He does it to save both lives and property,
All that is precious to you and to me.
So take a good look at this modern warrior who serves his call proud and true,
And know that he would die just to save me and you.

Curves of Coleman partners with Avon for Women’s Fitness Study
5/6/2008

Coleman, Texas (Grassroots Newswire) 05/05/2008 --
With over four million members worldwide, most would think the Curves women’s fitness franchise has nothing to prove. But the company is going above and beyond and looking for participants in the Coleman area to be a part of the Curves/Avon Fitness Study to ensure that everyone knows the power of the Curves workout program.

For $30, participants will be asked to complete 12 workouts over a 30-day period with a minimum of three workouts per week. In addition, participants will receive a start and finish fitness evaluation, 30 days free on www.CurvesComplete.com,  an online diet and fitness solution, and supervised training from a Curves trainer.

"With so many fitness membership choices, it’s imperative that we demonstrate how serious we are about weight loss and an active lifestyle. This study allows us to further differentiate ourselves from the competitors," said Linda Hyde, owner of Curves of Coleman. "And Avon, a company that is so compassionate about women, is the perfect partner for this initiative. We encourage Coleman residents to be a part of this study. What is there to lose, except a few pounds?"

The Exercise and Sports Nutrition Laboratory at Baylor University will be evaluating the research that is gathered in the fitness clubs and analyzing the results, which will then be published in various journals.   For more information on the Curves/Avon Fitness Study, please contact Curves of Coleman at 325-625-4968, or visit the Coleman Curves location at 211 W. Pecan.

123 Entries in the Show

5/5/2008

The Sesquicentennial edition of the Juried Arts Show will be in Coleman this week. “Art is Great in Twenty-0-8” will be held May 7-11 at the Franklin Center. When the dust settles and a final evaluation and count is made: The juried art show will look like this:

--1 year in the planning and executing; hundreds of emails, phone calls, mailings and messages
--66+ patrons responded with help and support and words of encouragement
--123 entries were sent to the show by 49 artists statewide representing 28 towns
--64 of those paintings were juried into the show by Tom Lockhart to hang in the exhibit on the newly installed Gallery Hanging System – funds provided by a grant from the Friends of the Foundation
--16 k-5th grade students entered the First Great Texas Blue Bunny Coloring Contest
--400 Coleman Elementary students toured the exhibit and watched 4 artists’ demonstrations
--14 Adult Workshop students from Del Rio, Dallas, San Angelo, Abilene, Brownwood, Carbon, & Coleman attended a 2-1/2 day workshop led by Tom Lockhart;

A critique by Lockhart of 46 paintings in a Power Point Presentation was presented Thurs. evening;

77 Tickets were sold for the Gala Dinner/Art Preview Sat. night with out of town guests for the Gala being from Buchanan Dam, Bertram, Abilene, Brownwood, College Station, Arlington, Carbon, Brady, Novice, Fredericksburg, Blanket, Nemo, San Antonio, Voss. An Art Demonstration by Tom Lockhart, with the demo painting being up for bid, will be the highlight of the evening.

An Awards Celebration and Reception to present Exhibit awards in the amount of $2950 and Texas Blue Bunny Awards in the amount of $155 will be accomplished on Sunday afternoon, with the Sesqui Queen, Retamae Gaines, being the honored guest.

This sounds unbelievable, doesn’t it? But it was possible because everyone participated and contributed his/her talents toward the greater good of the JAS. An appropriate motto is: “Nothing can stop a good idea whose time has finally come” (Victor Hugo) and we believe the time of the Juried Art Show has come.

Thanks to all who helped and contributed in any way. It is appreciated.

HUMANE SOCIETY OPENS FURNITURE OUTLET
5/4/2008 (contributed)

The Humane Society is pleased to announce that its new furniture outlet will be open on Saturdays from 9 – 4 at 110 East Pecan in Coleman. The 110 location will be used to display the larger donated items that we do not have room for at the 109 West Pecan thrift store location. Our household items, decorative accessories, toys, jewelry, books and clothing, etc., will continue to be available Thursday through Saturday at 109 as usual. Thrift store summer hours are Thursday-Friday, Noon – 6 p.m., Saturday, 9 – 4.

In addition to furniture items, we will also show larger items such as appliances, lawn items, and tools at the furniture outlet. A 90-day layaway will be available.

If you want to donate items to the furniture outlet, give us a call. We hope you can deliver, but we can make arrangements to pick up when necessary. If you have items where some belong to the 109 thrift store and others belong at the 110 outlet, just bring it to the 110 location where we have more space. We’ll figure it out!

All proceeds from our thrift store locations go to support the year-round discounted spay/neuter program that we offer in Coleman County. Applications for the discounted spay/neuter vouchers will always be available at the thrift store and the outlet. We hope to expand this program as well as establish other programs to benefit our furry friends as thrift store revenue allows. We are a work in progress! And we have you, our generous supporters and customers, to thank.

We will try to have our adoptable foster dogs available at the stores on a regular basis.
Call the Humane Society message line at 325-625-4724 if you need information or have items to donate, or contact Nelda Copley at the 109 West Pecan thrift store location or Jo Ann Eddleman about the furniture outlet location.

Bluecat Band Represents Coleman in Galveston
5/2/2008

Last weekend the Coleman High School Big Blue Band took their spring trip to Galveston for the “Trills and Thrills Music Festival.”

The trip began with a lengthy bus trip Thursday afternoon. Band members spent Friday deep sea fishing, swimming at the beach, and shopping on Galveston’s Strand. Saturday the Big Blue Band went inland to Milby High School and gave their concert for the music festival. The band performed two of the pieces played at UIL contest earlier this month. Critiques were given by two judges, who gave the performance a “Superior” rating. The festival included tickets to Galveston Island’s Schlitterbahn Waterpark, which is where the band spent the rest of Saturday. The Big Blue Band spring trip ended on Sunday with the bus ride home. It was a great trip and the students had a blast!

The Big Blue Band would like to thank the sponsors, bus drivers, and band boosters for all of their hard work to help make this trip possible!
