Bangs Tops Bluecat JV in Close Game
9/28/2007
Coleman Bluecat JV Football team traveled to Bangs to take on the Dragons. The team got off to a somewhat slow start as both teams traded punts for awhile. The game was very physical as both teams found getting to the end zone difficult. Bangs scored first but the Bluecats stopped them on the two point conversion try. The half time score was Bangs 6 Coleman 0. In the second half the defense on both sides increased as neither team moved the ball very well. The Bluecats held the Dragons in a great goal line stance and took over on downs inside the Coleman 5 yard line. The Bluecats then began a march down the field that ended with a 50 yard scoring run by Daniel Vasquez. On the score two great blocks were made. Jonathon Sanchez made a great block leading up the middle that got Vasquez into the open, and then Garret Mendoza raced up the field running interference and getting the last block at the 5 yard line that got Vasquez into the end zone.

With the score tied for much of the second half, 6 – 6, the Dragons scored again going up with about 2:00 minutes to play. The team returned the following kick off to mid-field. The team drove down the field and in a hurry-up mode got all the way inside the 5 yard but ran out of time. The Bluecats came up short losing 12 – 6. The team fought valiantly to the very end. It was a great battle.

Britt Bartel had a great game on both sides of the ball. Tanner Strickland played a great game on defense as did Edgar Barrios and Garrett Stuard. The inside linebackers played great as well; they are KC Hale, Adam Jimenez, Ross Jackson, and Jonathon Sanchez. Marcus Garza played well in the secondary.

The team played hard and again showed improvement this week, the guys are anxious to get back to practice to get to work to take on the Grape Creek Eagles next Thursday.

Santa Anna and Novice Win, Panther Creek Loses
9/22/2007

Santa Anna - Zephyr held the lead at halftime, 26-14, but the Santa Anna Mountaineers found new life in the second half and went on to beat the Bulldogs 57-34. The Mountaineers are now 3-1 on the year while Zephyr is 1-3.

It didn't take Santa Anna long to claim their home turf in the 3rd quarter as Fausto Maldonado (#25) scored at 8:26 bringing the Mountaineers within four, 26-22. They regained the lead with 6:34 left in the 3rd quarter when Terrance Jackson (#2) scored. After a successful PAT, the score was 30-26 and, after that, the night belonged to the Santa Anna Mountaineers.  Pictures below.

Novice -
There's nothing like homecoming to bring out a crowd but a good football team helps too. The Novice Hornets have been the real deal this year and are 4-0 after beating Moran 69-35 Friday night. Caleb Pringle (#10) and Josh Arispe (#32) had big games again for Coach Charles Bryant and staff. Pringle scored five TD's and Arispe scored two while gaining 190 yards on the ground. Jarod Briley also hauled in a 70 yard scoring pass from Arispe. Better keep an eye on the Hornets who love that winning feeling this year.  Pictures below.

Water Valley - Times were tough Friday night in Water Valley as the young Panther Creek Panthers dropped their fourth straight game 65-20. The game was ended on the 45 point mercy rule with a few seconds left in the third quarter. It was the first home game of the year for Water Valley, the first three had all been road games.
The Panther's scores were a 10 yard pass from Griffin to Blackwell in the 1st quarter, then runs by Griffin and Turney in the second quarter.

Coleman JV Battles Brownwood to Scoreless Draw
9/21/2007

The site was Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood where the Coleman JV team took on the Brownwood JV Thursday evening.

Most of the game was played between the 20 yards lines as neither offense could get it into the end zone during the game.

Coleman did advance to just inside the 15 yard line at one point before a fumble ended the drive.

The Bluecat defense was hard hitting all night long with one of the officials commenting on how hard both teams were playing.

Bluecats Rout Rotan
9/15/2007

If there was ever total domination of an opponent, it was Friday night as Coleman made quick work of the young Rotan Yellowhammers 59-14. The Bluecats concluded the non-district schedule with a perfect 3-0 record having scored a total of 153 points in three games. The Cats are idle this week.

The Bluecats couldn't do anything wrong in the first quarter while Rotan couldn't do anything right. Before anyone could stop and take a breath, Coleman led 31-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Bluecats tacked on another 21 in the second quarter and another 7 in the third quarter. The scoring included a 37 yard field goal by Oscar Villeda.

Top rushers for the Bluecats were Colton Buzzard who carried the ball 5 times for 137 yards, Caleb Walker 10 carries for 60 yards and Bronson Buzzard 4 carries for 31 yards. Brandon Worsham also caught a 24 yard touchdown pass from Colton Buzzard.

Andrew Isom and Caleb Walker also found the end zone.

The two Rotan scores came when a blocked Coleman field goal attempt was picked up by Dexter Daniel and returned for a TD. Late in the game, Rotan scored again when a snap from the center bounced off the quarterback's shoulder and into the hands of Daniel who ran for a 53 yard score.

First Downs - Coleman 16, Rotan 4

Coleman JV Gets Win over Winters
9/13/2007

The Coleman Bluecat JV Football team hosted the Winters Blizzards on Thursday night at Hufford Field. The Bluecats played very well coming away with the win 36-14.

The first score came just over a minute into the game when Daniel Vasquez scored from 29 yards out. The conversion failed.

The Bluecat defense held the Blizzards in check during the first quarter and with 1:58 remaining in the first quarter Jonathon Sanchez scored from 2 yards out then scored on the 2 point conversion and the Bluecats were up 14 – 0.  (photo below courtesy of Michael Worsham)

Midway through the first quarter the Blizzards scored but were denied on the conversion and the lead was down to 14 – 6. The Bluecats answered with 15 seconds left in the first half when Trent Hambright scored his first touchdown on a run from 11 yards. Britt Bartell then completed a pass to Daniel Vasquez and the half time score was 22 – 6.

The Coleman defense came out in the third quarter and held Winters to no points for the 3rd quarter while the Bluecats scored two more times. Kyle Russell got the scoring started in the second half with a sac and a safety. Then on the ensuing possession the Cats marched down the field capped off with an 18 yard run by Britt Bartell. To end the 3rd quarter the score was 30 – 6.

In the fourth quarter with time running down Winters scored again and completed the 2 point conversion play making the score 30 – 14. With 18 seconds left on the clock, Winters lined up and attempted an onside kick. Trent Hambright did not have to wait long to get his second touchdown as he scooped up the ball and raced 74 yards for the final score of the game, the 2 point conversion failed.

All in all it was a great night for the Bluecats. The team played well on both sides of the football. KC Hale, Gary Heath, John Estes, and Kyle Russell all recorded sacs. Kyle Russell intercepted a pass in the end zone to end a Blizzard drive. Anthony Beltran had an interception as well. All of the guys played well and showed much improvement this week. Garrett Mendoza had a great night in the secondary, just nearly making a diving interception on a trick throwback play. Tanner Strickland played well on both sides of the ball. Again, the final score was Coleman Bluecats 36 Winters Blizzards 14.

Bluecats Melt the Blizzards
9-8-2007
The Coleman Bluecats have scored 94 points in their first two games and remain undefeated in the non-district schedule.  Friday night in Winters, the Bluecats overcame their own numerous mistakes and penalties to beat the Blizzards 49 to 14.

Coleman had the first offensive series and the first offensive play of the game for Coleman was an interception by Winters. They took the ball over on Coleman's 12 yard line, and scored with 8:45 left in the 1st Quarter on a 7 yard pass. After a successful PAT, the score was 7-0 in favor of Winters.

Coleman then started on their own 20 yard line and 8 plays later, with 6:41 left in the 1st Quarter, Colton Buzzard ran 32 yards for a TD.  Oscar Villeda's PAT was good. The score was now tied 7 - 7.

Winters then had a 4 and out, helped along by an 11 yard sack by J.D. Crowder forcing the Blizzards to punt.

Coleman started their next drive on the 40 yard line. Brandon Worsham ran 20 yards for a 1st down, Bronson Buzzard ran 6 yards, then an offsides penalty on Winters gave Coleman another 1st down. The drive ended with a 4 yard touchdown run by Bronson Buzzard, PAT was good by Villeda bringing the score to Coleman 14  and Winters 7.

Winters took the ball with 2:16 left in the 1st Quarter but were unable to capitalize on the possession. After two sacks by Jamal Agbor and N'difone Agbor, the Blizzards were again forced to punt.

Coleman began the 2nd quarter on their own 34 yard line. The first play resulted in a 41 yard pass from Colton Buzzard to Brandon Worsham. After several plays, including an 18 yard pass from Buzzard to Dalton DeLeon, Brandon Worsham took the ball into the end zone from 2 yards out, with the Villeda PAT clearing the goal posts to bring the score to 21-7 with 9:45 left in the 2nd Quarter.

The next Blizzard drive was stopped cold when Bronson Buzzard intercepted a pass. Colton Buzzard finished off Coleman's possession with a touchdown run, with Villeda's PAT good. Coleman 28 - Winters 7 with 6:29 left in the 2nd Quarter.

Winters' luck didn't change with their next possession, as they fumbled and Coleman took over the offensive side of the ball again. With a 22 yard pass from Colton Buzzard to Dalton DeLeon and a 20 yard run by Bronson Buzzard, DeLeon ended the drive with a touchdown run, Villeda's PAT was good bringing the score to Coleman 35 - Winters 7, with 1:30 left in the 2nd Quarter. Winters ran the clock out of the first half, leaving the halftime score at 35 - 7.

The 3rd Quarter didn't bring the Blizzards any better luck. Their second play from scrimmage ended with an interception by Glen Edington and a 22 yard touchdown run. Villeda's PAT was good, bringing the score to Coleman 42 - Winters 7 with 11:01 left in the 3rd Quarter.

Winters managed to hold onto the ball getting another 1st down after 2 plays, but had to punt with 8:19 left in the 3rd Quarter. Coleman took the ball on their own 26 yard line, but after moving to their own 36 yard line, had to punt. The Blizzards blocked the punt and took over on the Bluecats 20 yard line. After 3 plays, they scored and the score was 42 - 14 with 4:02 left in the 3rd Quarter.

Coleman received the kickoff and moved the ball 21 yards, but had to punt with 1:44 left on the clock in the 3rd Quarter.

Winters ran out the clock in the 3rd and the Bluecats defense ended their drive with 10:59 left in the 4th Quarter.

The Bluecats started their next drive on the 18 yard line. After Coleman lost 4 yards on the first play, Bronson Buzzard then took the next handoff and ran 86 yards for a touchdown. The Villeda PAT was good, and the score was now Coleman 49 - Winters 14, with 10:20 left in the game.

Winters did get another chance with the ball, but Brandon Worsham took all hope away when he intercepted a Blizzard pass with 7:38 left in the 4th Quarter.

Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the game, but Zack Doyle took over the quarterback position, and Caleb Walker and Andrew Isom joined him in the backfield. These three Bluecats combined for a 56 yard drive, making 2 more 1st downs and running 5:57 off the clock. Winters took the ball back on downs with 1:41 left in the game, and the final score was Coleman 49 - Winters 14.

Way to go Bluecats! Coleman's record is now 2 - 0.

Brady's only score of the night came with :33 left in the 3rd quarter as running back P. Williams broke free for a 65 yard romp. The Bulldogs missed their PAT and were left with only 6 points for the night.

Coleman's last score was with 5:21 left in the 4th quarter when Caleb Walker scored from four yards out. Villeda kicked the PAT giving Coleman the win, 45 to 6 before a capacity opening night crowd in the Heart of Texas.

CCC Brings Back Successful Member-Guest Tournament
New Partnership with Blanket CC

9/3/2007
The Coleman Country Club hosted another successful golf tournament on August 25th and 26th. The always popular Member-Guest Golf Tournament was brought back this year. The two-person teams are given pops back to par based on their handicaps. Saturday’s scores consisted of the best-ball on each hole per team, but Sunday the competition stiffened with both partners’ scores counting on each hole. A total of 18 teams competed for the top honors.

The partnership of Densman and Wharton took first place in the Championship Flight beating the field by 4 strokes. They shot 62 on Saturday and a combined 145 on Sunday for a total of 207. Coming in at second place was the team of Parrott and Raeshtke with scores of 68-143 for a total of 211. Finishing in third place was Bean and Birdwell with scores of 65-149 for a total of 214.

Presidents Flight 1st Place - Jeff Tibbetts and Lupe Barreon

The Presidents Flight proved to be interesting as the team of Jeff Tibbetts and Barreon made a comeback on Sunday to capture first place honors with scores of 70-140 for a total of 210.

Darla Tibbetts and Bobby Boatright came in at second place with scores of 71-144 for a total of 215.

Third place consisted of a four-way tie with a combined two-day total of 217. Those teams were McKee and Bird (67-150), Brann and Wilkins (67-150), Greaves and Forester (70-147) and Nanny and Middleton (65-152)

Whether you are a local Bluecat sports fan that can't make it to the game or a Bluecat living a long way from home, you can be at the game each Friday night by listening to it on Colemannews.com. Here is how it works, it's very simple:

On our local news/home page and on our sports page, there is a blue and white banner near the top of the page which says "Listen Live". Click on the banner.  (Scroll up, it's at the very top of this page right under the word Sports)

You will be taken to the official Coleman Bluecat Broadcast Site. You will see the Bluecat schedule with a "Click here to LISTEN LIVE" prompt. On Friday night, all you will have to do is turn on your speakers, click to Listen Live next to the Brady game, and that's all there is to it.

For those of you attending the game, players playing in the game or if you just want to listen to it all over again, each game will be archived for several months. The listen live prompt will turn into an archives prompt.

Randy Turner returns to the broadcast booth to bring you the play-by-play, having been the "Voice of the Bluecats" for almost 20 years. Randy will be joined by Phil Chambers who brings a wealth of football knowledge to the color commentary chair. As always, the Colemannews.com cameras will catch the action on the field for you to enjoy on the sports sponsor page following the game.

Glen Edington ran the Bluecat offense for a while Thursday night against Hawley.  He completed the pass and led the team downfield nicely.

Bluecats Look Ready for Season
8/24/2007 by Randy Turner

If I were a coach, I could probably find plenty of areas for the Bluecats to work on and improve. But, I'm not a coach. I'm a fan and what this fan saw Thursday night is a group of Bluecats who enjoy the game, enjoy each other, have fun and play the game darn well. The Bluecats are ranked 3rd in Texas in Class 2A by Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. That is a lofty perch to be on, one that Coleman teams in recent memory haven't been on.  Local fans will tell you it sure feels good and August 31st can't get here soon enough.   Here are a few of my thoughts going into the season.

*
The Bluecats look like football players - the power lifting program surely has paid off, plenty of strong kids that carry themselves well.
*
Speed? Got that too - there were some break away runs Thursday night.
*
Size? Some of these kids are huge, some aren't, but they all hit big. I really like the looks of our linemen.
*
Depth? Yep, at most positions, you can insert any number of players and feel good about their ability. I know of lot of teams who would enjoy having three quarterbacks who are all capable of leading the team.
*
Passing Game? There were several nice catches by several different receivers, and quarterbacks who could get the ball to them.
Well Coached - Our kids knew where to be and got there in a hurry.

Sure, I'm a homer, but I think anyone who watches Coleman this year will leave the game knowing they watched a quality 2A football team.  Before all this goes to our head, remember, it's a long season, plenty can happen, you always need Lady Luck on your side, but I sure like being on the Bluecat side of the line of scrimmage going into the season.

The Bluecats scrimmaged Hawley Thursday night and dominated both sides of the ball. At the end they played one quarter of regulation football. The Bluecats scored two touchdowns, was on the cusp of another when time ran out and didn't allow Hawley to score. The Bearcats have some good looking athletes and are expected to be very competitive in their district this season.

Panther Creek Football Practice Underway
8/15/2007
The Panther Creek Panther Football Team has been practicing hard late each afternoon at the school.

Colemannews.com visited practice Tuesday evening and talked with Head Coach Wiley Cummings. It is the third year for Cummings to coach at Panther Creek, his second year as head coach. He tells us he has 15 players on his team this season with five starters back, two on the offense and three on the defense. The Panthers hope to improve on a 4-6 / 0-4 record and to that end, their first scrimmage will be this Saturday.

Blackwell and Moran are both scheduled to be at Panther Creek at 10:00am Saturday, August 18. Panther fans are invited to come out and watch.

The Panthers compete in Division One, District 13 along with Santa Anna, May, Blanket and Rising Star.
