Game
Summary vs Stratford Elks
You have to hand it to the Stratford
Elks. Their defense held Coleman to negative rushing yardage in the first half.
When it came time to control the game, they did in a big way in the third
quarter. Coleman's only score was a kickoff return by Chase Avants, otherwise,
the Bluecat offense never took the field in the third period. Here is how the
game played out.
We have to commend Sarah Smith of Coleman for singing a beautiful rendition of
the National Anthem, lots of pressure, she pulled it off like a pro.
* Coleman won the toss and had first possession of the ball. The series ended in
a punt.
* Stratford took over on the Coleman 43. The Bluecats made a fine defensive
stand, holding the Elks at the 2. Facing 4th and goal, the Elks kicked a field
goal to lead 3-0.
* Coleman started their next series on their own 31, ran five plays and punted.
* Stratford started on their own 33 with 2:40 left in the first quarter. At
10:25 in the second quarter, they scored a TD on a pass play. Bluecats fans felt
the receiver pushed our defender down but the score stood with no PAT, 9-0.
* Coleman took the kick and started at their own 27. Bluecat quarterback Colton
Buzzard was injured on this series, Glen Edington was his replacement. Coleman's
drive ended on a fumble with the Elks recovering at 8:56 left in the half.
* Stratford ran three plays and threw a pass intercepted by Stanley Cole at the
18 yard line with 7:35 left in the 2nd Q.
* Coleman moved the ball to the 49 but failed to convert on 4th and 1 giving the
ball back to Stratford on downs.
* With a few seconds remaining in the first half, Stratford scored another TD on
a pass from QB Hunter Buckles to Scott Hudson, the 2pt. PAT was good, giving
Stratford a 17-0 lead at halftime.
* Stratford received the kickoff to begin the 3rd Q and started at their own 36.
Facing a 4th and 7 on this series, the Elks completed a 10 yd. pass to stay
alive. Finally, on 4th and goal from the 8, Stratford kicked a 25 yard field
goal to lead 20-0.
* Coleman's only score of the game
came when Chas Avants returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards into the south end
zone. Oscar Villeda kicked the point after. Stratford 20, Coleman 7. (Coleman
hadn't played to their potential thus far in the game, but this score brought
the Bluecats around to their old form, they were renewed and played much better
from this point forward)
* Stratford started their next drive on their 41. The series ended in a punt.
* With 9:47 left in the game, Coleman's offense touched the ball for the first
time in the second half. The Bluecats went to the air three straight times, all
incomplete, and had to punt. Nice punts all night by Adam Vasquez.
* With 9:27 left, Stratford went to clock control, watching the play clock tick
down to the final seconds before snapping the ball. The series was short lived,
the ball going over on downs with 7:17 left.
* Coleman began their next series on their own 32. Glen Edington went to the
airways completing a 20 yard pass to Brandon Worsham and a 26 yard pass to
Bronson Buzzard to move the ball to the Stratford 17. With 4:46 left in the
game, the Bluecats were called for holding and then for a false start, moving
the ball back to the 29 yard line eventually facing 4th and 14 and failing to
convert.
* A great defensive stand by Coleman forced Stratford to punt to Bronson Buzzard
who was tackled and then hit late by an Elk. The 15 yard personal foul gave
Coleman good field position.
* From the 44 yard line, Edington completed a 21 yard pass to Chase Avants, had
a couple incompletions, then found Worsham for a 16 yard completion. Coleman got
to Stratford's 7 yard line with 56 seconds remaining but a delay of game penalty
moved Coleman back to the 12 facing 3rd and 7, then 4th and 7. Edington threw
one last hope to Avants in the end zone, incomplete.
* With 45 seconds remaining, Stratford ran out the clock and won the Regional
Championship 20-7.
Elks
Claim Regional Playoff Game
12/2/2006
The 2006 Class 2-A, Division II, Regional Championship trophy went to the
Stratford Elks Friday, December 1, at Lowery Field in Lubbock. Stratford beat
the Coleman Bluecats 20-7 before a large contingent of Bluecat loyals. Coleman's
season ends with 9 wins and 4 losses, a Bi-District and Area Championship to
their credit.
It was a rough night for the Bluecat offense, it simply wasn't hitting on all
cylinders. At halftime, the Bluecats had negative rushing yardage. By the end of
the game, the Bluecats had seven first downs and 94 yards total offense, only
one yard rushing. The Bluecats passed for 94 yards, mainly in the second
quarter. Compounding the problem was an ankle injury to starting sophomore
quarterback Colton Buzzard in the first half who watched the game on crutches
the rest of the night. Sophomore backup QB Glen Edington was thrown into the
frey and performed admirably against the defending Class A state champion Elks.
The only score in the game for Coleman came when Chase Avants returned a kickoff
84 yards. Oscar Villeda added the extra point.
A game summary will follow later.
