CHS vs. Bangs – Dual
Tennis Meet
3/30/2007
On
Tuesday, March 13, the Coleman and Bangs tennis teams
played a dual meet at the Coleman High School courts.
Bangs brought 8 players to compete against Coleman’s ten
players. The format of a dual meet allows all players to
participate in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles in a
scrimmage/practice system. All the players matched up in
the various groups and played short sets (first to win 4
games) due to threatening weather. The kids were very
competitive while showing great sportsmanship through
all the matches.
Results
for the Coleman players are:
Jeremy Jameson won his singles match over Jay Johnson
and won 2 boys doubles matches, playing with Thomas
Wells in one and Cole Hubbard in another.
Thomas Wells won his singles match against Terry Davis
and won 2 boys doubles matches with Jeremy Jameson and
Nolan Tidwell.
Cole Hubbard won a boys doubles match (with Jeremy) and
a mixed doubles match (with Kenna Cornelius).
Ashley Bremiller won a doubles match (with Iris Bendull)
and her single match vs. Cora Teed, and lost a mixed
doubles match, playing with Nolan Tidwell.
Kenna
Cornelius defeated Cora Teed in singles, won a mixed
doubles match (with Cole), and lost one singles match to
Jessica Clark.
Meagan Ogden and Iris Bendull defeated Jay Johnson and
Cora Teed, and Meagan lost a singles match to J. Clark.
Iris Bendull won the doubles match listed above as well
as another doubles with Ashley Bremiller.
Adam Dobbins and Tye Barnett matched up against various
players, winning 2 matches of boy’s doubles.
The Coleman tennis team has been very active,
participating in several dual and triple meets as well
as major tournaments in Abilene, Santa Anna, Brownwood,
and San Saba. The district meet is set for Monday, April 2 and
Tuesday, April 3 in Brady (had originally been scheduled
at San Saba). The varsity

team and competed very well in the strong winds in
Abilene.
The boys came home with the second place medal by
defeating a team from Clyde, after a close loss to a

"It Ain't Over 'til It's Over"
3/29/2007
Yogi Berra was right. The Bluekatt
softball team learned Wednesday that you have to play a
full game in order to win. Costly errors turned what
seemed to be a Coleman victory into a 5-3 Lady Longhorn
win. The Katts are still in the chase for district with
a record of 6-2.
The first two innings were scoreless. Amanda Brewer
broke the game open with a triple to right field to lead
off the third inning. A bunt single by Tara Brixey drove
in Brewer to give Coleman a 1-0 lead.
In
the fourth, a triple by Jessica Morales drove in Carissa
Zarate and a sacrifice by Cheyenne Turner brought home
Morales to put the Katts ahead 3-0.
Early's first run was in the bottom of the fourth with
the score 3-1 through five full innings.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the wheels fell off
for the Katts as Early loaded the bases with one out. A
variety of errors allowed four Early runs, the Lady
Longhorns held the Katts scoreless in the seventh, game
over 5-3.
This was definitely one they gave away. Still, the Katts
had some hot bats Wednesday, that was good to see as
they continue their district run. Sonya Cruz struck out
two batters, Rynn Norris pitched in the final inning,
the Katts committed a total of eight errors.
"It's Like Déjà Vu All
Over Again"
3/29/2007
In
keeping with our Yogi theme, the Bluecat baseball team
experienced a similar ending to their game as did the
girls. The Bluecats carried a 3-2 lead into the top of
the seventh inning but couldn't score. In the bottom of
the seventh, the Longhorns put two runners on and
advanced them to second and third. The Bluecats then
allowed a walk to load the bases, walked-in a runner
when the batter was hit by a pitch, then scored the
winning run on a Bluecat infield error.
The final score was Early 4, Coleman 3. The Bluecats had
four hits and one error. Corbin Brooks pitched until the
seventh inning when Brandon Worsham was brought in.
Early had four hits and three errors. The Bluecats are
now 4-2 in district.
Katts 6-1, Norris Gets Win in Ballinger
Bluecats Win Too
3/28/2007
Rynn Norris (left) recorded seven
strikeouts through six innings Tuesday evening in
Ballinger as the Bluekatts blanked the Lady Bearcats
10-0. The win gives Coleman a softball record of 6-1 in
district.
In the first inning, Eden Duquette singled to drive in
Kaneesha Graves, Duquette later scored on a past ball.
Carissa Zarate and Jessica Morales both got on base and
were both driven in by a single from Cheyenne Turner.
The Katts led 4-0 after the first inning.
In the second inning, a Lauren Golson hit drove in
Amanda Brewer, a past ball scored Keagan Slayton, a
sacrifice hit by Eden Duquette scored Golson to increase
the Katts lead to 7-0.
Defensively, in the second inning, the Katt's Duquette
nabbed a line drive to center field and turned a double
play by throwing out the runner at second.
In the third inning, the Katts scored one run as Norris
crossed the plate.
The Katts score two in the top of the sixth, held
Ballinger to no runs and ended the game after six on the
10 run rule.
Coleman will play Early at 4:00pm Wednesday in Coleman,
the game cancelled due to rain last week.

Bluecats Bury Armadillos
Homer Twice
3/21/2007
SAN SABA
- Colton Buzzard
was the first batter Tuesday night for the Bluecats. On the
first pitch of the game, he swung and sent the ball over the
left field fence past the 300 ft. mark and that set the
stage for the rest of the night.
The Bluecats improved to
3-1 in district by beating the San Saba Armadillos 10-2. Buzzard is
shown being greeted by
teammates after crossing home plate.
Chase Avants was the winning pitcher and went the distance
throwing 117 pitches, 72 strikes, 45 balls, 8 strikeouts and
3 walks.
At the plate, Colton Buzzard had the lead-off homer but in
the fourth inning Corbin Brooks also sent one out of the
park in left field. Colton was 2 of 3 at the plate, two hits and one RBI.
Chase Van Pelt was 1 for 3 at bat. Brandon Worsham was 2 of
4 at the plate, Corbin Brooks was 2 for 2 with a homer and 3
RBI.
The Bluecats utilized the bunt very well and scored three of
their runs on squeeze plays.
The next game is this Friday against Early at 4:00pm here in
town. Special thanks to Dr. Paul Reynolds for the
stats.
The JV Bluecats also beat San Saba 5-3.
Cruz and Katts Cruise to
Victory Against San Saba
3/21/2007
SAN SABA -
The Bluekatts usually rely on sophomore
pitcher Eden Duquette but she rested her
pitching arm
Tuesday. On the mound, instead, was another sophomore, Sonya
Cruz, who stepped up admirably and pitched a one-hitter,
leading the Katts to a 10-2 victory over the Dillos. Cruz
struck out 14 Dillo batters.
The Katts started their scoring in the first inning when
Keagan Slayton crossed the plate. San Saba fought back and
scored two to briefly lead the game 2-1 at the end of the
first inning but that would be all their scoring for the day.
In the second inning, the Katts loaded the bases and scored
two runs from walks given up by the San Saba pitcher and
regained the lead 3-2.
The Katts broke open the game in the fourth inning when
Duquette doubled to drive in Kaneesha Graves. Carissa Zarate
doubled to score Duquette. Jessica Morales walked to get on
base then Cheyenne Turner singled to score Zarate and
Morales. Rynn Norris also singled in the inning which ended
with Coleman ahead 7-2.
In the fifth, Graves opened the inning with a base hit.
Slayton used a bunt out to move Graves to third. Duquette's
hit past second base scored Graves making the score 8-2
after five.
The final runs for the Katts came in the top of the seventh
inning as Norris and Amanda Brewer walked to lead-off the
inning. Graves singled to load the bases. Slayton singled,
Norris was thrown out at home but the bases were still
loaded. Lauren Golson celebrated her 18th birthday by
hitting a double to drive in Brewer. More walks given up by
the San Saba pitcher led to Slayton scoring the final run of
the game.
The Katts are now 5-1 in district face the Early Lady
Longhorns at 4:00pm Friday in Coleman in a battle for second
place.

Partial results for the Katts include first place for
Caitlin Hail in the 100 hurdles and first place for the 800
relay team of Caitlin Hail, Kamber Royce, Shelby DeLeon and
Carissa Zarate. A complete list of results is at the

The
Bluecats, behind the pitching of Corbin Brooks, chalked up
another win Friday afternoon 5-3 over the Wall Hawks. The
victory gives the Bluecats a 2-1 district record. They have
defeated Wall and Grape Creek while losing by one run to
Bangs.
The next game scheduled is a district contest in San Saba
Tuesday, March 20th.
The schedule shows the JV game at 4:30pm and the Varsity

Bluekatts Defeat
Wall Hawks
3/19/2007
The Bluekatt softball team improved to 4-1 in district
action Friday afternoon in Wall defeating the Lady Hawks
5-3. The Katts mounted a 5-0 lead as the game progressed but
in the bottom of the 7th, the Hawks came to life scoring
three runs which made for a tense ending but a good one for
the home team. Eden Duquette was the winning pitcher,
striking out five. The Katts also turned a double-play when
Carissa Zarate caught a line drive and threw to Amanda
Brewer at first base to turn two.
The next game for the Katts is yet another road trip to San
Saba, scheduled for
5:00pm Tuesday, March 20th.
Update on Bluecat Tennis
3/15/2007
The
Coleman High School Tennis Team has been very active
recently, competing in several dual meets and tournaments.
The team went to Brownwood’s Coggin Park for a dual meet
with Early on February 20 and traveled to Cisco on February
26 for another dual meet. On Tuesday, February 27, Bangs and
Ballinger came to Coleman for a triple meet at the City
Park. The Coleman team has made an outstanding showing at
each of the meets.
Vs. Early (2-20)
Attending: Jeremy Jameson,
Thomas Wells, Tye Barnett, Adam Dobbins, Cole Hubbard, Kenna
Cornelius, and Meagan Ogden.
The
students played singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, winning
19 matches, losing only 2 for the night.
Vs. Cisco
(2-26)
Attending were Kenna Cornelius,
Ashley Bremiller, Jeremy Jameson, Thomas Wells, Cole
Hubbard, Tye Barnett, and Adam Dobbins. The team won every
match that night and played singles, doubles, and mixed
doubles in various combinations.
Vs.
Bangs and Ballinger (2-27)
Ballinger and Bangs brought 12 players to compete against
the Coleman team. Every student played singles, doubles,
and/or mixed doubles. Competing for the Coleman team were
Adam Dobbins, Tye Barnett, Megan Ogden, Kenna Cornelius,
Tori Valdez, Cole Hubbard, Jeremy Jameson, Nolan Buford,
Nolan Tidwell, Thomas Wells,
and Ashley Bremiller. Several matches were close and all the
players worked hard and improved their games.
Coleman
is scheduled to compete in the San Saba Tournament this
Friday and Saturday. The district meet is set for April 2
and 3 in San Saba. You can see the entire schedule on the
Coleman High School web-site.
Bluecats and Katts Beat
Grape Creek
Birthday Present for a Katt
3/14/2007
The
Bluecats and Katts didn't expect to play in Grape Creek
Tuesday but they did and won both games. Thanks to some much
needed rain in Coleman, the local fields were too wet to
play. Grape Creek, about 10 miles north of San Angelo, had
drier fields so to avoid having to make up games later,
Coleman traveled to Grape Creek.
In
the boys baseball game, the Bluecats looked sharp as they
took care of the Eagles 9-5. Corbin Brooks was the winning
pitcher, plus Brooks hit a home run to drive in Glen
Edington and Bronson Buzzard had a solo homer.
The Bluecats are now 1-1 in district and travel to Wall,
south of San Angelo, this Friday afternoon.
In
the girls softball game, the Bluekatts beat the Lady Eagles
5-2. A highlight of the game was when freshman, Carissa
Zarate, gave herself a 15th birthday present. She hit a home
run over the left-center field fence in the first inning to
drive in Lauren Golson. Eden Duquette was the winning
pitcher and struck out five. Two Coleman errors led to the
two runs by Grape Creek. The Katts are now 3-1 in district
and travel to Wall Friday. And yes, the team sang
Happy Birthday to Carissa after the game.

Spur
Stops Santa Anna
2/17/2007
In
a game which was up for grabs most of the night and never
out of reach for either team, it was the Spur Spurettes that
scored down the stretch to win the Class A Area Championship
39-34 Friday night in Jim Ned.
Both teams had highs and lows all night and seemed pretty
evenly matched. There were many missed scoring opportunities
for the Mountaineers, especially in the first half, but the
same can be said of Spur. The Spurettes had the momentum
going into the fourth quarter after holding Santa Anna to
only four points in the third quarter. But Kendra Coleman
stole the ball from Spur and scored early in the fourth
quarter which seemed to give the Lady Mountaineers a brief
spark before Spur returned the favor and took the ball away
twice and scored to regain momentum.
With
3:27 remaining, Spur led 35-31 when Sierra Herrod found the
net for three to pull Santa Anna within one, 35-34. Little
did anyone know that would be the final points for the
ladies in gold the rest of the night while Spur added four
more points to seal the win.
Scoring were Kendra Coleman 9, Sierra Herrod and Jelisa
Kirven 7, Martika Whaley 5, Molly Pritchard 3, Taylor Randle
2, Kristle DeLeon 1. The Lady Mountaineers finish the year
with an impressive 30-7 record and perfect 8-0 district
record. It was the final game for seniors Jelisa Kirven,
Kristle DeLeon, Jessica Moreno, Monica Cortez and Chelsea
Guerrero.

Bluecats Continue Fundraiser for Australian Trip
2/13/2007 (contributed)
Bluecat seniors Myles Baker, Curtis Yates and Chase Avants
have been invited to play football in the Down Under Bowl in
Australia this summer. They are holding various fundraisers
to help pay for the trip.
The Junior High Valentine dance went really well last
Saturday night, we raised almost $500 for Curtis, Chase and
Myles. We are planning a dance, fish fry, cow patty bingo
and auction in March at the Bill Franklin Center. Hopefully,
this will raise all the money they need to go to Australia.
Ethan Densman (in the dress) showed up at the dance and paid
his money to dance with all three boys, a proud moment for
sure for Chase. Sorry guys, this was too good to pass
up.

underway with games being played on Thursday evenings and
all day on Saturdays at the Coleman Junior High gymnasium.
The young players have shown a lot of enthusiasm and fierce
(but friendly) competition. Age divisions include 3-4 grade
boys and girls and 5-6 grade boys and girls. Come on out and
support these youngsters and get a glimpse of the upcoming
basketball talent in Coleman County. Admission is $2 for
adults and $1 for students. (Sorry, but CYBL is unable to
honor student athlete and senior passes as this is not a
school sponsored activity.)

Rusty Buzzard, Coleman Head
Football Coach and Boy's Athletic Director, is named a
finalist for the Class 2A 2006 Gordon Wood Award. Buzzard,
who is quick to point out it isn't his work but his staff's
work, that should be recognized. Nonetheless, his name is on
the list with Bryan Huseman of Littlefield, Eddie Metcalf of
Stratford and Johnny Taylor of Idalou from Region One. You
can read more about it
