Early Sweeps Games from Coleman
1/31/2007
The Early Lady Longhorns used a relentless press and run and gun style of play in the first half Tuesday night to gain the upper hand and coasted to a 70-42 victory against the Katts. The second half was more evenly matched but by then it was too late. The Katts were led in scoring by Jessica Morales with 10, Caitlin Hail 8, Sarah Lofton 7, Kaneesha Graves 6, Carissa Zarate and Kamber Royce 4, Nicole Heath 3.

The Coleman boys found themselves in a hole at the end of the first quarter and played catch-up after that, coming close in the fourth quarter, but lost to the Longhorns 50-36. Chase Avants led scoring with 14, Colton Buzzard 7, Casey Lofton 4, Ethan Densman 4, Glen Edington 2, N'difon Agbor 2, Bronson Buzzard 2, Jack Reynolds 1.  Pictured is Chase "Air" Avants scoring two of his 14.

Santa Anna Girls Remain Undefeated
Panther Creek Girls Fall to Brookesmith

The Lady Mountaineers are a perfect 8-0 in District 15-A with a 62-32 victory over Paint Rock. Scoring for Santa Anna was led by Coleman with 15.

The Santa Anna JV girls beat Victory Life Academy 63-23.

The Panther Creek Lady Panthers are now 3-5 in district after losing to Brookesmith 61-34. Jennings had 12 to lead PC.


8th Grade Girls Win in OT
1/30/2007
The game was so good, they had to play extra minutes to determine the winner. In overtime Monday night, the Coleman 8th grade girls beat Bangs 38-36. It was a total team effort as two starters went out with injuries in the third quarter. Congratulations on a great job!


Panther Creek Splits Games with Paint Rock

The Paint Rock girls beat the Panther Creek Lady Panthers 66 to 45 Friday night. In the boys game, the Panthers beat Paint Rock 78 to 63.


Bluecats Claim First District Victory

The Bluecats got the monkey off their back Friday night with a 59-46 victory against San Saba to give Coleman a 1-8 district record. San Saba is also 1-8. It was a big night for Chase Avants and Jack Reynolds as both had double figures to lead the team, 17 for Avants and 14 for Reynolds. Other scoring was done by Ethan Densman, 9; Bronson Buzzard, 6; Glen Edington, 6; Colton Buzzard, 4; Casey Lofton, 2 and Chase Vanpelt 1.

Coleman - 15 - 17 - 10 - 17 = 59
San Saba - 6 - 10 - 12 - 18 = 46

The Bluecat JV boys beat San Saba 38-36.


Katts Fall to Lady Dillas

The Bluekatts played hard but came up short Friday night losing a District 6-2A tilt to the San Saba Lady Dillas 51-45. The Katts were led by Kaneesha Graves and Jessica Morales, each with 11. Caitlin Hail added 10, Carissa Zarate 6, Kamber Royce 4, Nicole Heath 2, Lexi Horsak 1. The Katts are now 3-8 in district and travel to Early this Tuesday night.
The JV girls beat San Saba 35-21.


Santa Anna Girls Win Against Novice
1/27/2007

How about those Lady Mountaineers? They are still undefeated in district with a record of 7-0 after beating the Novice Lady Hornets 66-31. Novice is 0-7 in district. It was a 10 point night Santa Anna's Whaley, Coleman and Dean. Also scoring were Herrod 8, Randale 8, Kirven 6, Pritchard 6, Guerrero 5, DeLeon 2, Cortez 1.
For Novice, Holmquest 9, Sadler 7, Cisneros 4, Escobar 4, Watts 3, Briley 3, Arispe 1.


McIver is ARN Six-Man Offensive Player of the Year
Other Mountaineers Also Honored

The Abilene Reporter-News named Santa Anna Mountaineer Ben McIver as their All Big-Country 6-Man Offensive Player of the Year. McIver, a senior, racked up over 4,000 total yards. He was also named a spread back on the All Big-Country Offense.
Making the defensive team were Fausto Maldonado, Jordan Whaley and Terrence Jackson. Demetrus Reese was Honorable Mention wide receiver. You can see the complete list HERE.


Powerlifting in the Spotlight Thursday Night

How many high school girls do you know who can power up 325 pounds on the squat rack? For that matter, how many guys do you know that can do that? Men, any takers?

Tiffani Baker of Coleman High School is certainly one to watch in upcoming Powerlifting events which CHS athletes compete in. She cleared 325 pounds without a problem Thursday night during the Bluecat Lift-a-Thon.  The event raised money to purchase additional weight equipment for the junior high and high school athletic programs.

Dalton DeLeon and Bronson Buzzard Make Reporter-News All-Big Country Team
Honorable Mention Honors to Casey Lofton, Colton Buzzard and Stanley Cole

Colemannews.com congratulates Dalton DeLeon and Bronson Buzzard for making the 2007 Class 2A All-Big Country Football Team as chosen by the Abilene Reporter-News.

DeLeon, a 5'9" sophomore receiver, caught passes for 664 yards and six touchdowns. Buzzard was named to the team as a defensive back. The 5'11" junior made 92 tackles, had four interceptions, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. Buzzard was also honorable mention running back.

Colton Buzzard, a sophomore, was honorable mention at quarterback, Casey Lofton, a junior, was honorable mention on the offensive line. On the defense, Stanley Cole, a sophomore, was honorable mention at linebacker. Read about the entire All-Big Country team HERE.


Santa Anna Lady Mountaineers Win in OT

Santa Anna fell behind by 10 points in the first quarter but fought back the rest of the game, finally beating Brookesmith by two points in overtime, 51-49. The win leaves Santa Anna in first place in District 15-A. Kristle DeLeon scored 14; Kendra Coleman 9; L. DeLeon 8; Herrod 7; Kirven 6; Whaley 5.

The Santa Anna JV edged Brookesmith 34-28.


Novice Girls and Boys Lose to Paint Rock

Paint Rock beat the Novice Lady Hornets 46-29 Tuesday night. Scoring for Novice were Sadler, 17; Briley, 7; Cisneros 2; Escobar 2; Holmquest 1. Novice is 0-6 in district.

In the boys game, Paint Rock 59, Novice 40. Scoring for Novice were Martinez 14; Pringle 11; Moreno 7; Liddell, 4; Odell 2; Briley 2.


Wall Wins Boys Battle

With each passing game, the Bluecats are playing a better brand of basketball. The Wall Hawks are a very formidable opponent and beat the Bluecats Tuesday night 73-44 in District 6-2A action. As the score by quarters shows, the Bluecats were within five after one period but lost ground in the second quarter which proved to be too much to overcome. The Bluecats shared the scoring with Chase Vanpelt leading the way with 9 followed by Dalton DeLeon, 8; N'Difon Agbor, 7; Glen Edington, 6; Ethan Densman, 5; Chase Avants and Colton Buzzard, 3; Bronson Buzzard, 1. Vanpelt and Colton Buzzard scored one three pointer each.

In the JV Boys game, it was Wall 47, Coleman 28.

Katts Stand Strong But Fall to Wall

The Wall Lady Hawks are tall, fast and a very good basketball team. But you can be very proud of your Coleman Bluekatts who gave the Lady Hawks everything they could handle Tuesday night at CHS. The final score was Wall 54, Coleman 43. Wall relied heavily on their 6'0" post, Page Weisuhn, who scored 30 points. Coleman's starting five all shared in the scoring with Caitlin Hail leading the way with 17. Kaneesha Graves was in double figures with 12 followed by Carissa Zarate with 7, Jessica Morales with 5 and Kamber Royce with 2. The Katts played extremely well in the second half, outscoring Wall 23-20, getting within five points at one point in the fourth quarter. However, they were not able to overcome the 34-20 first half deficit.

The JV girls also played a good game, much improved over their first meeting with Wall.  The final, however, was Wall 42 and Coleman 22.  Wall pulled away in the second half.

Around District 6-2A, Jim Ned beat San Saba 44-39 and Ballinger beat Bangs 57-24.


Area Radio Station to Offer Superbowl

The Superbowl will be carried on Newstalk 96.9 FM on Sunday, February 4th, with the pre-game show beginning at 3:00pm.


Hawks Fly Into Town Tuesday Night

District 6-2A basketball continues Tuesday night at Coleman High School as the Bluecats host basketball power Wall. Freshmen girls and boys play at 4:00pm. JV girls and boys play at 5:00pm. Varsity girls play at 6:30pm, followed by the Varsity boys. Wall swept the first games between the two schools on December 29th.

Bluecat Booster Club to Meet Wednesday Night

The Bluecat Booster Club meeting has been rescheduled for 8:00pm Wednesday, January 24th, on the second floor of the Coleman hospital. They will be discussing spring sports and year-end activities. Everyone invited to attend!


Bluecat Coach Buzzard to Coach in All-Star Classic
1/22/2007

Rusty Buzzard, Bluecat Head Football Coach and Boy's Athletic Director, has been selected to the coaching staff of the 2007 Myrle Greathouse Big Country FCA All-Star Classic football game. The game, featuring area seniors, will be played Saturday, June 2, at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene. Teams will be announced February 3rd. Coach Buzzard will be coaching the South Team under the leadership of Mike Spradlin, Abilene Cooper Head Coach. Other coaches on the South squad include Walter Hargrove from Jim Ned, Glen Jones from Brady and Eddie Pettit of Bangs. The head coach for the North team will be Tim Holt of Big Spring.
The coaching staffs and players will be honored at the All-Star Classic banquet on March 27th at the Abilene Civic Center.


Bluecats and Katts Lose in Grape Creek

The Coleman Bluekatts lost in overtime to Grape Creek Friday night 39-35. The Katts had defeated Grape Creek the first time they played them in district in December.  The Katts are now 3-6 in district play.

The Bluecat boys varsity lost to Grape Creek 57-45 and are still searching for their first district win.

Bluecats Fall Short But Show Great Improvement
1/16/2007
The Coleman Bluecats made a good showing Tuesday night, much improved over previous games, but the Bangs Dragons used a strong second quarter to overcome the Bluecats 58-48 in District 6-2A play.
It was a big night for sophomore Dalton DeLeon who popped the net for 21 points to lead the Bluecats. Of the 21, nine points came from behind the three point line. N'Difone Agbor was next with 8 hard-earned inside points followed by Chase Avants, 6; Colton Buzzard, 5; Bronson Buzzard and Glen Edington, 3; Jack Reynolds, 2. The Bluecats landed six three-pointers. Hopefully the team can continue to improve as they did Tuesday night.

Katts Take Victory Against Bangs

The Bluekatts got back in the win column Tuesday night on the home court by beating Bangs 67 to 36. The game marked the beginning of the second half of district in which the Katts now have a 3-5 record. Coleman controlled the tempo of the game from start to finish. The young Bluekatt squad was led by freshman Carissa Zarate who poured in a game high 15 points. Next was Kaneesha Graves, a senior,  with 14 followed by Jessica Morales, another freshman, with 12. Others scoring were Kamber Royce and Caitlin Hail each with 8; Sarah Lofton and Lexi Horsak 4 each; Meagan Dunnam, 1; Nicole Heath, 1.

3rd - Coleman 21, Bangs 16

It was a high fouling game, 22 fouls in the third quarter alone.  Needless to say, it was a long game.

The JV girls won 58-29 but the freshmen girls lost 30-24.

Around District 6-2A Tuesday night, the Ballinger girls beat San Saba 44-39.  Early beat Jim Ned 71-65.


Panther Creek Ladies Beat Novice

In a cross county match-up, the Panther Creek Lady Panthers beat the Novice Lady Hornets 53-32. Meyer had 15, Jennings had 14 to lead Panther Creek followed by Davis with 7, Hafner and Finlay with 6, Suggs with 5.
For Novice, Sadler scored 17, Cisneros 7, Escobar 4, Briley and Holmquest each with 2.
Novice is now 0-4, Panther Creek is 2-2.


Novice Boys Top Panther Creek

The Novice Hornets beat the Panther Creek Panthers 45-40 Tuesday in boys district basketball. Both teams now have 1-3 district records. For Novice, Martinez led scoring with 20 followed by 15 from Moreno, 8 from Liddell, 2 from Odell.
For Panther Creek, Stephenson had 13, Van Pelt 10, Hoelscher 7, Griffin 6, Allen 4.


Brookesmith Takes Win from Panther Creek

Brookesmith beat Panther Creek 59-54 Friday night in district play. Panther Creek is now 1-2 in district. Hoelscher led scoring with 18 followed by Stephenson with 15. Griffin added 10, C. Vanpelt 7; Kooley 2; J. Vanpelt and Allen, 1.
 


Jim Ned Sweeps Coleman

While the Bluecat basketball teams played better than they did Tuesday night in Ballinger, it was still an all Jim Ned night at CHS.

In the Varsity Boys game, the final was Jim Ned 67, Coleman 28. Sharing high point honors for Coleman were N'Difone Agbor and Dalton DeLeon, both with 10. Adam Vasquez scored four while Jack Reynolds and Bronson Buzzard each scored two.

In the Varsity Girls game, the final was Jim Ned 62, Coleman 39. There were several young players on the floor on both sides. Coach Barbara Cox started two freshmen (Morales and Zarate) while Coach Jimmy Avery of Jim Ned started three sophomores, a junior and a senior. Scoring for Coleman were Caitlin Hail, high point, with 12; Jessica Morales, 9; Kaneesha Graves, 8; Kamber Royce and Carissa Zarate, 4; Nicole Heath, 2. The Katts are 2-5 in district 6-2A.

In other scores from Friday night, the Freshmen girls lost to Jim Ned 25-8. The JV girls lost to Jim Ned 48-25. The JV boys lost to Jim Ned 67-30.


Panther Creek Splits Games With Paint Rock

The Panther Creek Panthers beat Paint Rock 67-42 Tuesday night. The Panther Creek Lady Panthers were upset by Paint Rock 42-35.


Lady Mountaineers Prevail Over Novice

The Santa Anna Lady Mountaineers defeated the Novice Lady Hornets Tuesday night 78-32. Novice came out playing with intensity and led at one time during the first quarter but Santa Anna was able to regroup and went on a 13-0 run to take control.
Leading scorers for Santa Anna were Jelisa Kirven and Kendra Coleman each with 16 and Kristle DeLeon with 10. Kirven also had 10 rebounds and five assists.
Leading scorers for Novice were Cisneros with 12 and Sadler with 10.


Rough Night at Ballinger

Painful best describes Tuesday night basketball games in Ballinger as the Bearcats dominated their home court in all games against Coleman. 

The final score of the Varsity Girls was Ballinger 57, Coleman 27. The Lady Bearcats are now 5-1 in district 6-2A while the Bluekatts are 2-4.

Ballinger got off to a fast start with their run and gun play. Coleman took their first shot of the game with 2:25 left in the first quarter and shot only twice the entire quarter which ended with Ballinger ahead 16-0. The Katts fought back and got their feet under them better in the second quarter but Ballinger had extended their lead to 36-9 at the half. In the second half, the Katts continued to fight but came up short against a very talented Ballinger bunch 57-27.

Scoring for Coleman were Caitlin Hail, 9; Nicole Heath and Meagan Dunnam, 4; Sarah Lofton and Kaneesha Graves, 3; Jessica Morales and Kamber Royce, 2. 

In the boys game, it was Ballinger 84, Coleman 26. Ballinger got off to an early 23-0 lead after the first quarter, 47-8 at the half as their outside shooting found its mark. Scoring for the Bluecats were Colton Buzzard, 8; Dalton DeLeon, 6; Ethan Densman and Glen Edington, 3; Bronson Buzzard and Chase Vanpelt, 2; N'Difone Agbor and Jack Reynolds, 1.

Amy Simmons and Lady Mavs Ready for Tournament

Wheelchair basketball was in the spotlight in Coleman December 30th when Coleman graduate Amy Simmons and members of her team had a fundraiser at CHS.
