Bluekatts Receive More "Big Country Player of the Week" Honors
4/29/2008

Amanda Gober, catcher and Freshman for Coleman softball received the "Player of the Week" award from the Abilene Reporter News sports staff. "Gober is one of the top Big Country underclassmen in any sport, and went a combined 9-for-12 in Coleman's three-game playoff series win over Haskell. Helping the Lady Bluecats reach the area round, Gober finished the series with a double and nine RBIs. She also picked off two base runners."
Honorable Mention honors went to:
Cheyenne Turner, infielder, Jr., Coleman softball (was a combined 5-for-10 in three-game series vs. Haskell, with three runs scored and two steals); Eden Duquette, pitcher/infielder, Jr., Coleman softball (was a combined 5-for-11 in three games with Haskell, with two steals and four RBIs); Carissa Zarate, infielder, soph., Coleman softball (was a combined 5-for-12 in Coleman's three-game series with Haskell, with two triples, four steals and five RBIs); Jessica Morales, shortstop, soph., Coleman softball (was a combined 4-for-8 in three-game series vs Haskell, with 10 steals).

Coleman (20-6) will next face Kermit on Friday and Saturday in Snyder.


Santa Anna Athletes Headed to State Track Meet
4/29/2008

Kendra Coleman (below left) is making a habit of being in Austin every May. Kendra will represent Santa Anna High School at the State Track Meet on May 9th. She placed 2nd in the 100M Dash at the Regional Meet in Abilene last weekend to earn a right to run in the big show.

Santa Anna Varsity Girls' Sprint Relay placed 3rd at the Regional Meet 4-26-08 at ACU with a time of 51.17, which is a new school record at Santa Anna. They missed going to state by one place. The girls have worked hard this year improving their time each meet. Coach Kristi Herrod and Coach Shannon Herrod are extremely proud of all the track participants this year.

But the good news doesn't stop there. The boys sprint relay team placed 1st. These boys worked very hard this year, determined to get a ticket to the state track meet and they reached their goal.


CONGRATULATIONS to the Bluekatt softball team for winning the Bi-District Championship Saturday night in Abilene.
After losing game one Thursday night, the Katts bounced back Saturday to win game two 17-7 and game three 12-0.

Olinger Heads to State Golf Meet

CHS's Creston Olinger won a sudden death tie breaker match to win 2nd place as Medalist at the Regional Golf Meet. He will be traveling to
Austin to compete in the State Meet on May 5 and 6.  Congratulations Creston and Good Luck in Austin!


Granddaughter of Coleman Residents Advance to State Golf Meet
4/23/2008

Brittney Dela Rosa, a junior at Goldthwaite High is a member of the Goldthwaite Lady Eagles golf team that advanced to State by placing 2nd in the Regional tournament held in Brenham, TX on April 21-22. The state tournament (elite eight) will be held in Austin on May 5-6. She is the daughter of Johnny Ray and Joan Dela Rosa of Goldthwaite.
Her grandparents are Robert and Lupe Dela Rosa of Coleman, and James and Nedra Russell of Brown County


Regional qualifiers in track from Panther Creek High School are Cassie Philpot, Benton Warren, Ethan Griffin, and John Warren.

Playoff-Bound Katts Finish Regular Season on a High Note
4/15/2008

The Katts scored 4 runs in the 1st inning to set the tempo for the rest of the game Tuesday night against Early. Sonya Cruz started the game on the mound and kept the Early Lady Longhorns scoreless through the 3rd inning. Rynn Norris took over during the 4th and finished the game strong with 3-up and 3-down in the 7th inning. The Final score was 5-2 bringing the Katts to victory over the Lady Horns. The Bluekatts will have a practice game on Friday in Hamlin to prepare for the playoffs. More information on playoff pairings will be posted later in the week. Congratulations Katts!

Santa Anna Competes in District Tennis

Several Mountaineer tennis players did well at the District 12, 1A Tennis meet held last week in Brownwood.

In the junior varsity girls division, the doubles team of Kianna Albritton and Heather McMillan took second place, and Ashley Gibson and Janai Dillard took second and third place respectively in girls singles. In the junior varsity boys division, the doubles team of Spencer Gilbreath and Dillan Whitley finished in second place and Kenneth McMillan brought home forth place in singles competition.

In the varsity division, Lance Vasquez finished fourth in boys singles after loosing a very competitive match to eventual first place winner Luke Luttrell of Rochelle. In varsity girls competition, the doubles team of Peyton Morris and Paige Guerrero finished in third place after loosing a very close playback match to Click and Zepada of Eden for the second spot. In girls singles competition, Sarah Herrod took the second place medal and Joanie Dean ended up in the third spot.

The senior team of Sierra Herrod and Jarod Jones earned second place medals in the mixed doubles division.

The strong performance by the girls team brought home the District 12 Team Championship trophy. Mountaineer players Sarah Herrod, Sierra Herrod, and Jarod Jones all qualified for the Region II Tennis meet to be held at
Hardin Simmons University in Abilene on April 23rd and 24th.

Katts Softball Wins Again
4/11/2008

The Bluekatt Softball team is in the home stretch of the regular season and moved closer to ensuring themselves a place in the play-offs with a dominant 17-2 victory over the San Saba Lady Dillos.  After getting off to a slow start the Katts bats came alive in the 3rd inning and there was no looking back.  They host Early Tuesday at 5:00pm in Coleman for their final regular season game.

Also note that the game against Rogers will be played in Brownwood on a Saturday and only four regular season games will be played at Hufford Field this season. Bluecat Boys Golf Team - District Champions
4/9/2008

The Bluecat boys golf team won the District 6AA Championship this year. The team of Creston Olinger, JD Crowder, Drew Jackson, Chad Robison and Garrett Mendoza advance to Regional at Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird on April 21st and 22nd.

Meanwhile, the Bluekatt ladies won 3rd place in District 6AA this year. The team included Eden Duquette, Reagan Barr, Lisha Merkley and Taylor Armstrong. "The boys and girls played through some rough weather on all three rounds of play. I am really proud of how these teams played and represented Coleman High School," said Ron Cohea, CHS Golf Coach.

Katts Make Top 10 Once Again
4/8/2008

Weekly honors to athletes for their efforts on the baseball / softball diamond were released by the Abilene Reporter-News.

Rynn Norris, pitcher/infielder, Soph., Coleman softball -- Shut out Bangs 18-0 to improve to 5-1 on the year and went a combined 7-for-9 with three RBIs, three steals, a double and a triple through two games.

The Lady Bluecats enter this week at 14-5 overall and 8-3 in District 6-2A.

Update on Bluecat Golf

The next round of golf for the Bluecat teams will be played Tuesday, April 8th, in Baird.

The second district meet took place on Friday April 4th. The First Place Team is still in first place. The Second Place Team has slipped out of second place but still has a good chance to advance if they do well at the third and final round in Baird.

The third round will be played on April 8th at the Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird, Tx. Tee off at 8:30 am

Grape Creek Takes Two from the Blue
4/5/2008

It was not a good day for Bluecat varsity teams Friday at the local sports fields as Grape Creek was on a rise.

The Eagles defeated the Bluecats 8 to 4 on the baseball field while on the softball field Lady Eagle bats swung and connected often in route to a 14 to 6 win against the Katts who had beaten the Eagles earlier in the season. A Katt highlight was a Carissa Zarate homerun.

Coleman Tops Bangs

Both CHS teams beat Bangs Tuesday out at the baseball and softball fields.  The Katts trounced the Lady Dragons 18-0 in 5 innings.  The Bluecats scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to win 4-3.  Both teams face Grape Creek this Friday in Coleman.


Talented Katt Softball Team Receives Honors

The Abilene Reporter-News Big Country Top 10 has been released and the list includes several members of the Bluekatt softball team, as follows:

Eden Duquette, pitcher/infielder, Jr., Coleman Softball -- Led the charge in one of the best weeks the Coleman program has ever had, going 8-for-11 with nine RBIs, six steals and four runs scored.

Duquette also improved to 9-2 on the mound while helping Coleman sweep San Saba (11-1), Ballinger (20-3), and Jim Ned (5-4). The Lady Bluecats enter this week at 13-4 overall and 7-2 in District 6-2A.

Kudos to the Bluekatt softball team for being ranked 24th in Texas in Class 2A girl's softball in the most recent Texas Girls Coaches Association. The Katts are 13 and 4 on the season, 7 and 2 in district in 2nd place behind Early. Early is 5th in the state poll.

Katts Tame Lady Indians
3/30/2008
For the second time this softball season, the Bluekatts defeated the Jim Ned Lady Indians. The score was 5-4 in a game played at Jim Ned. It went the full seven innings but the final score was actually settled in the 3rd as neither team scored after that. The Katts scored a run in their first at bat, Jim Ned bounced back and topped that with three but the Katts countered with runs of their own in the next couple innings to get the win. The Katts will play Bangs here Tuesday.


Worsham's Homer Powers Cats by Ballinger

It's something you don't see a lot at the expansive Bluecat baseball field, a home run, but Brandon Worsham conquered the monster at The Yard Tuesday with a 3 run homer that helped lead the Bluecats to a 7-4 win over the Ballinger Bearcats. The Bluecats will be at Jim Ned Friday at 4:00pm.


Bluecat Boys Golf Team Leads District Standings
Girls Begin District Play Today

District golf is underway for Coach Ron Cohea and the Bluecat Boy's Golf Team. The first of three rounds was played in San Saba Tuesday. Coleman has two teams participating and they are in 1st and 2nd place after the first round.

The First Place Team consists of Creston Olinger, JD Crowder, Drew Jackson, Chad Robison and Garrett Mendoza.

The Second Place Team consists of Zach Doyle, Trey Casey, Andrew Isom, Jordan Robinson and Brody Tibbetts.

The second round for the boys will be played at the Coleman Country Club on Friday, April 4th.
The third round will be played at Baird on Tuesday, April 8th.

The Girl's District Golf will begin at the San Angelo Country Club today (Wed). The second round will be at Maxwell Golf Course in Abilene on April 3rd. The third round will be at Baird on Tuesday, April 8th.

The Bluekatt softball team began the second half of district play Tuesday against a Ballinger team they lost to in a dust storm in late February. This time, though, it was all Coleman all the time as the Katts put 20 runs across the plate to Ballinger's 3.   The Katts are now 5-2 in district.

The next game for the Katts is scheduled for 5:00pm this Friday at Jim Ned in Tuscola. 


Katts Take One from Lady Dillos

The Bluekatt softball team got back on the winning track Monday afternoon at their home field with an 11-1 victory over the San Saba Lady Dillos, a game rained out last week and made up Monday.

The Katts are back in action today (Tues) as Ballinger comes to town to begin the second half of district play. The Katts hope to avenge an early season loss to the Lady Bearcats at 5:00pm.

Over on the baseball diamond at CHS, the Bluecats hope to get the bats going against the Ballinger Bearcats in a district game scheduled for 4:00pm.  Be sure to go out and support our CHS athletes.

Bluecats / Katts Make Big Country Top 10

The Abilene Reporter-News recently published their Top 10 which featured several Coleman High athletes.

*Tye Barnett, singles, Sr., Coleman boys tennis - Won the singles title at the Brownwood Tournament, beating out competitors from Lampasas, Jim Ned, Lohn, Paint Rock, Rochelle, Brownwood and 13 other schools.

The win was the third of the season for Barnett, who also won the Jim Ned and Santa Anna tournaments in February.
The Bluecats' team captain is unbeaten in dual and triple meets with Cisco, Bangs, Ballinger and Santa Anna.

*Eden Duquette, pitcher/infielder, Jr., Coleman softball - Pitched in all three of Coleman's victories last week, helping to beat Grape Creek (11-3), Jim Ned (6-1) and Wall (9-3) in league play.

Duquette also went 5-for-8 at the plate, with a triple, an RBI and three runs scored to push Coleman to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in District 6-2A.

It may be Spring Break, but not for the Bluekatt softball team. Their game Tuesday was rained out but they are still scheduled to play at 11:00am this Thursday in Early against the Lady Longhorns, always a very good game if you can attend.


Tiffani Baker 5th at State Power-Lifting Meet

Tiffani Baker, a Junior, made a return trip this year to the State Power-lifting meet. Accompanying her was Coach Brenda Simmons (pictured left). They represented Coleman High School at the Texas High School Women's Power-lifting State Meet in Killeen on Friday March 14th. Tiffani placed 5th, bringing home a medal for her efforts. There was a total of seven girls in her weight class, that made it to State to represent all 2A schools in the state of Texas.  This is a great accomplishment...Congratulations Tiffani!

Basketball Tournament at Novice March 29th

The Novice Junior Class will host a fundraiser basketball tournament on Saturday, March 29, 2008, at the Novice High School gym. “Shoot for Prom Tournament ‘08” will be limited to eight teams, and it will be a single elimination tournament. The first eight teams will be entered in the tournament. Entry fee will be $10.00 per person with an unlimited number of players per team. Teams may be co-ed. The first place team members will receive a T-Shirt.

For more information, or to enter a team, contact Mincy Briley at 625-1071 or 325-668-4174.  There are still a few openings for teams! 

Full concession will be available all day and will include breakfast burritos, hamburgers cooked on the grill, Bar*B*Que Sandwiches, hot dogs, nachos, frito pie, French fries, etc. T-Shirts will be on hand for sale with the tournament logo. A hand-made picnic table will be raffled off as well other items. Tickets may be purchased from a Novice Junior classman for $1.00 each. There will be a free-throw shoot-out with an entry fee of $2.00 per person. The winner will receive half of the shoot-out money collected.

Admission will be free all day.  We need volunteers for concession workers, bookkeepers, clock runners, and referees.  Anyone of high school age or older may create a team to participate.

Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy a fun day of basketball.  All proceeds will go to the Novice Junior Class.

Tye Barnett Wins Tennis Singles Title at Jim Ned Meet

The Coleman High School Tennis Team competed in the Jim Ned Tournament held in Abilene at Rose Park on February 14th. Here are the results:

Boys Singles:

Tye Barnett: # Seed of Tournament (draw of 64 players); Bye; Defeated Sandoval of Breckenridge8-4; Defeated Shack of Albany 8-1; Quarterfinal Defeated Stone of Grape Creek 8-0; Semifinal Defeated Raschke of Colorado City 8-3; Final Defeated Wilson of Colorado City 8-1.

Tye received "Boy's Singles Champion Gold Medal Winner".

Jeremy Jameson: Bye; Loss to Shack of Albany 4-8; Defeated Rud of Hawley 9-8 with a 7-5 tiebreaker win; Quarterfinal Loss to Hernandez of Winters 2-8.

A special note from Coach Diana Dobbins: All team members played well and represented Coleman admirably. Several players had two days of practice prior to this tourney due to basketball. The Coleman High School Tennis Team now consists of 23 players and have performed well against Cisco in a dual meet & against Bangs and Santa Anna in a triple meet last Friday, February 8th. The CHS Tennis Team also participated in a practice meet in Bangs on Tuesday, February 26th.


Tiffani Baker Advances to State Powerlifting Meet

Tiffani Baker, a Coleman High junior, returns to a familiar spot, the State Powerlifting Meet after placing 3rd at the Regional 2A Powerlifting Meet.


At Regionals, Tiffani lifted a total of 825lbs with three lifts - squat, bench press and dead lift. She earned a trip to state by just 5 pounds. She went last year, we wish her the best this year on March 14th and 15th.


Katts in the Championship Game

The Bluekatt softball team has advanced to the finals of the Sweetwater Tournament to play either Sweetwater or Hawley at 12:30pm today.

The Katts beat district opponent Ballinger 9-0 Friday (the team they lost to last week) and Abilene Cooper JV in game Friday afternoon. They won all their pools games on Thursday as well.
