COLEMAN
YOUTH FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS
11/29/2007
Coleman was well-represented this year in the Big
Country Youth Football League. The three divisions which
included Mighty Mights coached by Jeff Hammonds, Junior
Pee-Wee coached by Cody Norris, and Pee Wee coached by
Lee Wayne West, played tough schedules including teams
from Abilene, Wylie, and Sweetwater.
The Mighty Might Bluecats finished their season by
playing for the Championship Title in the “Superbowl”.
They were defeated in a hard fought game against
Sweetwater (which was the team that they had their only
other loss to earlier in the season), and finished their
season with the second place trophy.
The Junior Pee Wee Bluecats, who were outsized by almost
every team they faced, were knocked out in the first
round of playoffs. It should be noted, however, that the
Abilene Raiders team that defeated them (by one point)
went on to win the division championship.
In the Pee Wee division, Coach West’s team advanced all
the way to round 3 of the playoffs before being beat
out, earning them the 4th place spot in their division.
Congratulations to the boys who all played with so much
heart, the coaches who put in so much time and effort,
and the parents and fans who gave so much support!
Katts Lose
First Game in Dublin
11/29/2007
The Bluekatts lost their first game in the Dublin Dr.
Pepper Tournament Thursday morning to the Dublin Lady
Lions 54-45. The Katts came out flat and sluggish
through the first half with points hard to come by.
The Bluekatt team in the second half played much better
and tied the game 25-25 with 3:46 left in the third
quarter. It was back and forth the rest of the way with
the Katts trailing 46-45 with 2:20 left in the game.
Dublin hit a 3 point shot down the stretch which opened
the lead with a little over one minute left, a lead the
Katts could not overcome.
Since there are three schools in the
tournament that still have teams in the football
playoffs, the tournament schedule is a little uncertain
at this time. The Katts could play Hays Lehman or Glen
Rose on Friday morning then play again on Friday night
but won't play on Saturday.

Score on Big Plays to End Crane's Season
11/26/2007
It was "big plays" by the Bluecats that sent the Crane
Golden Cranes to basketball season. Coleman defeated
Crane 33-22 Friday night in San Angelo to win the gold
Area Championship trophy. Here is how the scoring went:
* TD #1 took place with 5:57 left in the 1st Quarter -
Bronson Buzzard scored on an 8 yd. run. Oscar Villeda
kicked the point after to give the Bluecats an early 7-0
lead. The impressive thing about the drive was the
Bluecats kept the ball for half the first quarter and
methodically drove the ball down the field and made a
statement early in the game.
* TD #2 was the first "big play" of the night for the
Bluecats when Colton Buzzard through a 64 yard scoring
pass to Stanley Cole. A two-point conversion attempt
failed making the score 13-0.
* TD #3 was an 8 yard run by QB Colton Buzzard with 1:54
left in the first half. A two point conversion failed
again making the score 19-0.
* TD #4 was a 37 yard pass from Chisum to Esparza to put
Crane on the scoreboard. The PAT was good making the
score 19-7.
* TD #5 was a Crane pass from Chisum to Esparza. The PAT
pulled Crane within five points, 19-14.
* TD #6 was an amazing 77 yard run (shown above)
by Bluecat QB Colton Buzzard with 11:46 left in the
game. Oscar Villeda's kick made the score 26-14.
* TD #7 was a 50 yard pass from Colton Buzzard to Dalton
DeLeon with 10:20 left in the game. Villeda's extra
point made the score 33-14.
* TD #8 belonged to Crane, an fumble recovery returned
86 yards for a touchdown by Carrasco. The two point
conversion made the score 33-22, the final.
There
were other highlights too. In the first quarter, when
Crane attempted a 4th and 7 play, a good tackle by
Anthony Morales halted Crane's drive and gave the ball
back to Coleman. The end result was Coleman's second TD
of the game.
Dallas Patton recovered a Crane fumble in the second
half. Stanley Cole intercepted a Lloyd Chisum pass in
the 4th quarter which set up a Bluecat score. Cole then
intercepted another Crane pass moments later. Bronson
Buzzard intercepted a Chisum pass on the goal line and
returned the ball to the 35.

Bluecats Defeat Crane for Area Title
11/24/2007
The
Coleman Bluecats set the tempo of the game with a long
opening drive which ended in a touchdown, played
tenacious defense and scored on big plays to romp over
the Crane Golden Cranes 33-22.
The next stop on the Bluecat journey through the
playoffs is the Regional Championship game with either
Canadian or Childress who play at 2:00pm Saturday in
Canyon. We should know where and when the next Bluecat
game will be by Saturday evening and will post the

Katts Lose
to Eula
11/21/2007
Callahan County hasn't been too friendly to Coleman
Bluekatt basketball in recent days.
The Katts lost to Clyde last Saturday morning and lost
again Tuesday night to Eula, 45-38.
Eula jumped out to an early lead and pressed the Katts
and while Coleman mounted a comeback in the third
quarter, it wasn't enough. The Katts are now 2-2. They
play next in the Dublin Tournament at the end of next
week.
The Bluekatt JV girls were successful in Eula. They
defeated the Lady Pirates 35-20.

Bluecats Win Bi-District Title
11/18/2007
For the fourth consecutive year, the Coleman Bluecats
are Bi-District Champions. Saturday night, the Bluecats
and Haskell Indians returned to Cisco where, one year
ago, Coleman defeated Haskell in three overtimes. This
year, it took only four quarters for the Bluecats to win
another gold trophy, 17 to 7.
When Glen Edington
returned a Haskell kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown,
that seemed to be the spark Coleman needed.
After a scoreless first quarter, Haskell put together a
nice 13 play scoring drive which culminated with a 2
yard pass from Weston Rutkowski to Aaron Rodriguez. The
point after gave Haskell a 7 to 0 lead but on the
ensuing kickoff, Coleman's Glen Edington caught the ball
on the 15 and took an angle to the Haskell sideline and
turned on the after burners for a retaliatory score only
13 seconds after Haskell scored. Oscar Villeda added the
extra point and the game went to half tied 7 to 7.
For that matter, the game remained tied 7 to 7 through
the third quarter. It wasn't until the Bluecats unreeled
a 12 play drive which ended on a fourth and goal play
from the one. In a make it or give the ball back to
Haskell scenario, Bluecat #32 Stanley Cole was not going
to be denied as he ran off tackle left and launched into
the end zone
for the go ahead score with 9:17 left in the game.
Villeda's extra point gave the Bluecats a 14 to 7 lead.
What
seemed to drive the nail in the coffin for the Indians
was the next series when the Bluecat defense stopped
Haskell short on fourth down, giving the Bluecats the
ball. The next series ended on a 21 yard Oscar Villeda
field goal with 3:22 left making the score 17 to 7, the
final.
Game Stats

Jordan Robinson punted 4 times for a 33 yard average.
Haskell's Rutkowski punted 6 times for a 38 yard

teams had one but both retained possession

Waiting for the Bluecats are the Crane Golden Cranes,
the outright champion from District 7-AA in West Texas.
Crane is 10-1 with their only loss to Midland Greenwood
in week 2. Their district victories were all decisive
against Kermit, Ozona, Reagan County, Alpine and Van
Horn. Crane beat Comfort 50-21 in Bi-District.
Katts Melt Blizzards in Double OT
11/14/2007
As if one overtime wasn't exciting enough, the Katts and
Lady Blizzards went into two overtimes in Winters Tuesday
night but Coleman won the game, 63-61.
It was back and forth all night as the teams stayed close.
The gym was loud and rowdy, almost taking on a playoff
atmosphere at times. As the second overtime neared an
end, Carissa Zarate was on the receiving end of an outlet
pass from Cheyenne Turner, made the lay-up and gave the
Katts the edge. With only a few seconds remaining, Winters
made it back down the floor, missed a shot at the buzzer and
it was all over.
Sarah Lofton
led the Katts in scoring with an impressive 27. Others
scoring were Cheyenne Turner 10,
Carissa Zarate 7
Jessica Morales 6, Rene Salas 5, Jacy Payne 4, Nicole Heath
2 and Tabitha Terrell 2. The Katts are now 2-0 and will face
Clyde in Clyde at 11:00am this Saturday.
The Bluekatt JV also won Tuesday night, beating Winters
29-18.
The JV girls will play in the Eula Tournament the 15th through 17th.

Bearcats
Best the Bluecats
11/3/2007The Ballinger Bearcats blocked a point-after attempt in
overtime to hang on to beat the Coleman Bluecats 14 to
13 Friday night at Hufford Field.
The game was tied 7 to 7 and with seven seconds left
when a 31 yard Bluecat field goal attempt was blocked
which sent the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, Ballinger scored first on a 12
yard run by Rodriguez then kicked the point after making
the score 14 to 7.
Coleman then scored on a four yard Colton Buzzard
touchdown on a 4th down play and only needed to convert
the point after but it was blocked again by Ballinger,
ending the game.
In the first half, the Bluecats didn't have the same
offensive spark we've seen all year long but managed to
keep Ballinger from scoring in the first half. The only
score in the first 24 minutes was a 15 yard pass from
Colton Buzzard to Dalton DeLeon. Oscar Villeda's extra
point made the halftime score Coleman 7, Ballinger 0.
The Bearcats didn't waste any time scoring in the second
half as Rodriguez ran for a 58 yard touchdown with 10:25
left in the 3rd quarter. The extra point tied the game 7
to 7.
Between 10:25 in the 3rd and 10:57 in the 4th quarter,
there was plenty of defense and punting by both sides.
Ballinger fumbled a punt return which was recovered by
N'difone Agbor that gave the Bluecats a spark. That
helped set up a 35 yard field goal by Oscar Villeda
which barely missed to the left, keeping the score tied.
The Bluecats again put up a good defensive stand to hold
the Bearcats in check. The rest of the game is described
above.
Early, with a 42-7 victory over San Saba, is still
undefeated in district. Ballinger is now 5-1 while
Coleman drops to 4-2.

Bluecats Fall to Early
10/26/2007
In a battle between the two heavyweight contenders of
district 6AA, the Early Longhorns prevailed Friday night
20-18 on their home turf, handing the Coleman Bluecats
their first loss of the season. Coleman is now 7-1 and
4-1 in district.
Coleman scored first with 8:55 in the 1st quarter on a
30 yard field goal by Oscar Villeda.
After both teams traded punts twice, Early scored on a
34 yard field goal by Mitchell Bailey with :34 left in
the 1st quarter to tie the game 3 to 3.
Coleman then punted on their next possession, followed
by a good defensive stand to stop an Early drive. The
next Coleman series ended in a punt but the Bluecats got
the ball back when Colton Buzzard intercepted a Nick
Lyle pass.
The Bluecats cashed in on the take-away on a 27 yard
field goal by Villeda with 2:20 left in the 2nd quarter,
Coleman leading 6 to 3.
Then, with :22 left before the half, Early's Collin Rome
scored a touchdown on a 10 yard run, followed by the
PAT, giving Early a 10 to 6 halftime lead.
In the 3rd quarter, Early wasted no time scoring as Rome
ran in from 5 yards out. The PAT was good giving Early a
17 to 6 advantage.
On the next Bluecat possession, the Longhorn's Shane
Morris intercepted a Colton Buzzard pass which set up
the next Early score, a 25 yard field goal by Bailey
with :51 left in the 3rd quarter giving Early a 20 to 6
lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, Early recovered an on-side kick
and kept the ball, but later in the drive, Bailey missed
a 36 yard field goal.
The Bluecat's biggest drive of the night was filled with
edge of your seat plays. Glen Edington (#22 shown above) had a good run to
begin the drive, Colton Buzzard connected with Corbin
Brooks on a 4th down and 3 pass which led to a 10 yard
touchdown pass from Buzzard to Brooks with 11:34
remaining in the game. The PAT was blocked by Early,
recovered by Coleman making the score 20-12.
Early punted on their next offensive series, Coleman was
intercepted by Rome, Early had to punt again then the
play of the game happened for the Bluecats. Quarterback
Colton Buzzard broke free on an 80 yard run and scored
with 3:37 left in the game.
Down by 2 points, the
Bluecats tried a pass from Colton Buzzard to Bronson
Buzzard which fell just short, leaving Early ahead
20-18.
Above:
Colton Buzzard headed for a score
With no timeouts, Early got the ball back but their
series ended in a punt.
Coleman had one more opportunity with one timeout and
about two minutes to work with. As Colton Buzzard
scrambled for yardage, an Early player slapped the ball
out of his hand, the Longhorns recovered the fumble and
ran out the clock to beat the Bluecats 20 to 18.
The Bluecats return home to face the Ballinger Bearcats
next Friday night, their final home game of the year.
Come on out and support the Bluecats in their bid for
the playoffs.

Report on
Junior High Football
10/23/2007 (courtesy Coach Kim Smith)
The 7th grade
football team had a great game against San Saba last
week. The Bluecats beat the Armadillos 22-14 in a hard
fought game. The Bluecats played very well as a team and
were physical for four quarters. Our Offensive and
Defense lines help lead the team to victory. Colton
Gayle scored twice for the Bluecats with runs of 3 and
11 yards. Anthony Thomas also scored on a 63 yard pass
from Gayle early in the third quarter. D.J. Terrell led
all rushers with 73 yards. Shelton Zarate added another
12 yards to the total. Jace Newman had a catch for 40
yards that put the Bluecats in scoring position. This
win was a group effort by everyone on the team. The 7th
grade played like Bluecats and got the job done against
the Armadillos.
The Coleman Bluecat 8th grade
lost a hard fought contest to the San Saba Armadillos.
The final score was San Saba 28 Coleman 12.
The 1st quarter was a defensive struggle, with neither
team able to score. The 2nd quarter San Saba broke the
ice by returning a punt back for a TD.
The score at half was Coleman 0 San Saba 8
The 3rd quarter San Saba scored twice more making the
score going into the 4th quarter San Saba 22 Coleman 0
Coleman’s offense came alive in the 4th quarter behind
the blocking of Reed Needham, Randy Crossland, Wayne
Worsham, Dalton Faries, Blake Hammond and Brooks Jones.
Coleman drove the ball down the field on the running of
Payton Cody, Dillion Dority and Justin Morales. Payton
Cody ran the ball in from 33 yards out for Coleman’s 1st
score.
Following another score by San Saba, Coleman put another
drive together culminated by a 32 yard TD pass from
Marcus Hurtado to Reed Needham.

Hold Hawks Scoreless
10/12/2007
The Wall Hawks ran into a brick wall Friday night as the
Coleman Bluecats kept their perfect record alive with a
convincing 38-0 district win.
The Bluecats are 6-0 on the year, 3-0 in district,
un-scored on through 12 quarters or all three district
games.
The Bluecats have outscored Bangs, Grape Creek and now
Wall by 108-0 in the last three weeks.
Key Friday night was the outstanding blocking of the offensive line and tenacious defense. Wall came within one foot of scoring on the Cats but Bluecat pride rose to the occasion.

Bluecat JV
Dominates Grape Creek
10/9/2007 (courtesy Coach Howington)
Thursday night the Coleman JV hosted Grape Creek in a
district football game. The Bluecats came ready to play
and defeated the Eagles 35-0. The team limited the
Eagles to just thirteen yards total offense, while
gaining 376 yards. It wasn’t as though the Eagles never
moved the ball it is just that every time they moved
forward, the Bluecat defense would stiffen and drive
them back. Daniel Vasquez scored first on a four yard
carry 7:56 in the first quarter and the Jonathon Sanchez
kick failed and the lead was 6 – 0, it was a five play
70 yard scoring drive. With 2:23 left in the first
quarter Vasquez found the end zone again on a 3 yard
run, and then scored the 2 point conversion. This score
was set up by several great runs by Jonathon Sanchez.
Score was now 14 – 0. With 3:12 left in the second
quarter Sanchez found his way to the end zone on a tough
22 yard run, the 2 point conversion failed. At the 2:42
mark of the second quarter Adam Jimenez intercepted a
pass and ran it back for 24 yards and a score. Britt
Bartell completed a pass in the end zone to Daniel
Vasquez for the 2 point conversion. The half-time score
is 28 – 0. To start the second half the Bluecats kicked
off to the Eagles and the Eagle returner fumbled the
ball and it was recovered by Marcus Garza for the
Bluecats. On first down following the Bluecat fumble
recovery Daniel Vasquez scored on a 33 yard run. Adam
Jimenez added the two point conversion on a run. The
score is 35 – 0. The Eagle defense tightened and the
Bluecats did not score again. The remainder of the
second half was a defensive struggle. The final Score
Coleman Bluecats 35 the Grape Creek Eagles 0.
The defense played great. Adam Jimenez had a great game
from inside linebacker, including an interception
returned for a score. Tanner Strickland had another
great performance. The whole defense was active and
played well. The defensive line of Gary Heath, Daniel
Arietta, Jonathon Estes, and Tony Garcia controlled the
line of scrimmage. The secondary prevented any gains in
the passing game, Garret Mendoza, Travis Brixey, and
Marcus Garza. Edgar Barrios played well too. Marcelino
Felipe and Jonathon Estes combined to make a great play
taking both offensive guards and the center straight
back and pushing them over the quarterback for a sac.
All in all the team did a great job. The JV travels to
Wall on Thursday to take on the Hawks.

Bluecat
Nation,
10/8/2007
Just wanted to say "Hi and Thanks" from the Keith
family. We spent many happy years in Bluecat country and
have heartwarming memories from our time there. We left
when we had 2 1/2 kids, so I included a picture of all
of them at a recent Venus Bulldog Football game-
(We teach and coach at Venus ISD in Venus, TX). Miles is
6, Jenna is 3 1/2 and Zach is 2.
We
will always have a Bluecat section in our hearts and a
special place for the many amazing friends we made!
We love following the Bluecats on the internet (the palm
pilot with internet comes in handy at games so I can
keep up with several teams) and I like seeing former
students who have turned into Gridiron Superstars. It is
a small world, however, and I experienced that firsthand
a couple of Saturdays ago. I was at Pam's Donuts in
Alvarado, TX getting some breakfast goodies and just
happened to be wearing a Coleman Bluekatts track
t-shirt. Two gentlemen were over at the corner booth
discussing Friday night's efforts from all of the local
teams over coffee and one of them said, "Hey there young
lady! I couldn't help but notice your shirt. How about
those Bluecats! We are Bluecats from way back!"
Introductions were made and we had a nice conversation
about an even nicer town. These "young at heart" men had
graduated in 1952 and 1962 from Coleman High School.
They still have a ton of school and community pride and
they even mentioned that it was about Fiesta de la
Paloma time, although they said it had been called
something different when they were in the area. I did
not get the name of it, but maybe on another trip.
Something tells me that their meeting in the corner
booth was not a one time chance occurrence between the
two men.
They spoke highly of the Bluecats and quickly bragged
that their technological skills were keeping them close
to the game with the live computer broadcasts. One
admitted to having his grandson help him get his system
all straight to hear it. In a final attempt to show me
up, the oldest man there recounted the Alma Mater,
albeit not at full volume, and thankful that I still
knew it, I joined in the last stanza, whispering along.
They pledged to continue following what one of them
referred to as Buzzard Ball and we exchanged good-byes.
It was a good day to be a BLUECAT!
Best wishes for the coming season,
Mike, Ember, Miles, Jenna,
and Zach Keith
