Bluecats Star Season With Loss, but Tack On Win in Second Game
3/5/2010
The Bluecats lost to Eastland 13 – 3 in their first game of the Eastland Tournament. We played very well for 4 innings. Reid Needham pitched a solid game only walking 1 and striking out 4 in 4 and 2/3 innings. Leading hitters were Zach Doyle (2-4) and Tanner Brooks (2-3).
The Bluecats won their 2nd game against Dublin 11 – 7. Austin Smith pitched an excellent game striking out 14 and only walking 2 in 8 innings of work. Going into the top of the 7th we were down 7 – 5 when freshman Anthony Thomas hit a base hit up the middle to score Colton McConathy to make the game 7 – 6. Thomas then stole 2nd and then advance on a ground ball from Shelton Zarate to 3rd. Trent Hambright singled to score Thomas and tie the game. Defense held Dublin in bottom half of the inning. The first 3 batters reached on base in the Top of the 8th and McConathy singled to score Sanchez, Lefevere, and Brooks. McConathy later scored on a wild pitch. Smith struck out 1 and Jonathan Sanchez made two nice plays at short stop to end the 8th inning and the game. We are starting to hit the ball better but we are struggling making plays on defense. I was very proud of the way we fought back to get the win. The Bluecats will play in Eastland at 1:00 on Saturday for the consolation game.

Lady Mountaineers Fall to
Gordon
Submitted by
Becky Martin
2/17/2010
In
a tough bi-district match up
Santa Anna lost to the
Gordon Lady Longhorns 62-46.
Santa Anna got off to a good
start by hitting five
three-point shots in the
first quarter. Despite the
hot start Santa Anna was
able to only establish a
22-20 lead by the end of the
quarter. Gordon then built
up a 35-30 lead at halftime.
Santa Anna started out very
slow in the third quarter
which enabled Gordon to take
a double digit lead. The
Lady Mountaineers were able
to get untracked midway
through the quarter but by
that time Gordon had got
into a rhythm and were able
to counter any runs that
Santa Anna made. Santa Anna
played hard the entire night
but turnovers and a size
mismatch were just too much
to overcome. Santa Anna
finished the season with a
28-6 record. This was Santa
Anna’s second 20 plus win
season in a row.
In a practice game the Lady
Mountaineers won an exciting
50-49 double overtime
victory over Aspermont. This
game really helped prepare
Santa Anna for Gordon’s
press. Unfortunately it
could not prepare the Lady
Mountaineers for Gordon’s
size. This game marked Santa
Anna’s 28th victory.
To get to the bi-district
round, the Lady Mountaineers
dominated the second half of
district play by winning
their last six of seven
games. The biggest
pre-Zephyr test game came
against Rising Star on their
senior night. The Lady
Wildcats jumped out to a
12-2 lead and put Santa Anna
in a tough situation. The
Lady Mountaineers trailed
the entire game but in the
last two minutes were able
to rally to a 44-40 victory.
Santa Anna’s lone district
losses were to pre-season
district favorite Zephyr. In
game one Zephyr was able to
control the tempo and win in
a defensive battle by a
score of 27-21. Santa Anna
generated a little more
offense in game two but was
defeated at Zephyr 39-31.
Zephyr’s defense was a major
factor in both losses. Santa
Anna finished district with
a 14-2 record and in second
place.

Bluecats Drop Close Game to
San Saba Tuesday Night
2/11/2010
The Coleman Bluecats dropped
a very close game, Tuesday
night here in Coleman
against the visiting San
Saba Armadillos. “I was
extremely proud of how hard
the guys fought throughout
this game. We were down
before halftime by 15 points
at one time. We were able to
drop their lead to only 10
points at half. We outscored
San Saba 16-6 in the 3rd
quarter and were able to tie
the game before the 4th
quarter. With about 4
minutes to go we had a 6
point lead over the
Armadillos. In the final
minutes of the ball game we
let San Saba get back into
the game because we made
some costly fouls. They were
in the 1 and 1 free throw
situation and were able to
make some clutch free throws
to get back in the game. I
cannot say enough about how
hard the guys fought and
that was a very tough game
to lose because of the
effort the guys put in.”
Kyle Russell led the team in
scoring with 15 points
followed by Reid Needham
with 13 points.
The Bluecats will finish the
district schedule Friday,
February 12, 2010 and will
host Comanche. There will be
3 games in the Main High
School Gym starting at
5:00pm.
The Bluecats would like to
congratulate Coach Dawson
and the Bluekatts’
basketball program for
having a good season this
year.

Bluekatts 09-10: A WORD FROM
COACH DAWSON
2/10/2010
What goes
into a season? The old
saying blood, sweat, and
tears is very true but what
does that really mean? It
means giving up hours and
days during the summer to go
to tournaments and work-out
at the gym. It means running
miles during August and
September to be stronger in
October thru February. It
means sharing tears of joy
after an emotional win and
crying when it has to come
to an end. That’s just a
small taste of what has gone
into this season.
It has been
two years in the making
getting us to this point and
girls buying into our
concepts and believing in
what we are trying to do.
Parents allowing us to push
their daughters to the
limits and understanding
what we were trying to
accomplish. But most
important it takes kids that
want to be pushed and that
have a true desire to want
to get better to become
winners. We have winners. It
may have not always shown up
on the score board that way
but I can tell you this that
your Bluekatts are winners!
They have represented our
school and community in a
way that has brought back
respect and pride in our
basketball program.
I am proud to
call these girls my team and
am proud to have had the
opportunity to have coached
them. We finished the season
17-13 overall and 6-6 in
district. We graduate 4
great seniors in Rynn
Norris, Jacy Payne, Carissa
Zarate, and Jessica Morales
but we bring back 5 juniors
next year Vicky Cruz, Dylan
Buzzard, Erin Strickland,
Mercedes Taylor, and Jackie
Birdwell. Next season starts
now! I know the girls and
our coaching staff want to
say a great big thank you to
the parents, the fans, and
the students for all the
support we have had this
year. We plan on giving you
more to cheer about next
year and the years to come.
Thank you
Coach Dawson

2/8/2010
Coleman (17-12 6-5) 8 6 8

Early 16 8 11 7 42
Tough game, we were never able to get any type of run
going. We shot 17% from the field and you can’t do that
and win games. Part of it was they played good defense
and the other was we could not buy a basket. I felt like
we were taking good shots but we hesitated all night
with our decisions. I thought our defense did well and
honestly my goal was to hold them under 45 points. They
are a very good offensive team and have been averaging
55 a game so 42 was manageable for us. I just never
imagined we would shoot that poorly. That’s the way the
ball bounces tough sometimes. Girls fought the whole
game and worked to come back it just wasn’t our night.
Loved the support of our fans we had the stands packed
Friday and that was great to see. We hope everyone comes
out Tuesday for our last game and Senior night before
the game. We have had a great year and would love to
have a big crowd to show their support for these young
ladies and the work they have done to turn around our
basketball program. Hope to see you Tuesday at 6:30.
Varsity Boys
Versus Brady
2/6/2010
“I would like to
take this
opportunity to
say that I
really
appreciated the
job that Miss
Kourtney
Johnson, Mrs.
Mickey Holloway
and their BIPS
staff did with
the BIPS kids
this year. Would
also like to
thank all the
BIPS performers
this year. I
think they did a
fantastic job
and put on a
great halftime
performance.
Keep up the hard
work.
The varsity boys
played a better
2nd half in the
game against
Brady. I told
the guys at
halftime that we
could not play
timid against a
good team of
Brady’s caliber.
They realized
that in the
second half and
really got after
them. One thing
that I stressed
to our guys is
that we do not
get out hustled
and I truly
believe that we
won the hustle
battle. Brady is
defending their
district title
from last year,
so they are a
very good
basketball team
that has played
in some big
games over the
years. I think
our guys handled
themselves well.
The high school
boys basketball
team would like
to
‘Congratulate’
the varsity
girls’ team on
some huge wins
in the second
half of
district. Good
luck for the
remainder of the
season.”

Big win at home

Girls keep doing

girls have come
so far this

Understanding
the game and

during the game
itself have been
huge in this

have really
matured as a

great the

The painted

a lot of school

understand how
that effect the

the stands. I
think it really
makes them want
to be a Bluekatt
when they see
the crowd and
the gym packed
like this every
night. The BIPS
kids also did a
great job and I
saw a lot of
future Bluekatts
working on those
ball handling
skills. Keep
working. We have
a big game in
Early Friday and
we hope we
travel with a
big group of
fans. Go

8th Grade
boys fall short
of beating
Comanche
2/2/2010
Comanche
defeated Coleman
by the score of
36-30. The 8th
grade boys have
improved
dramatically
over the last
few weeks. The
first time we
played Comanche
this year they
beat us by 30
points. Last
night was a very
competitive
game. Missed
free throws turn
out to be the
downfall. The
eighth grade
boys are playing
much better
defensively and
our improving on
the offensive
end as well.
Coleman’s last
game will be
Monday night
here against San
Saba. Game time
6:30 pm

I was very proud of the way these ladies played tonight. We
played smart, aggressive, and together for 24 minutes; and
it resulted in a big win for us.
