Coleman Bluekatts Play-off
hopes are still alive
By Coach Tracy Dawson
1/31/2010
Coleman Bluekatts Play-off
hopes are still alive. Great
defense has been the key
this second round of
district. We have been able
to keep teams in check and
ourselves within striking
range throughout games. I
have never been so proud of
a group of young ladies than
I was Friday night in Bangs.
At the end of the 1st we
trailed by 10pts and I
imagine many thought it was
over but after the 1st we
won the points total the
rest of the game. We were
able to steadily chip away
at the lead. We went in a
half down 9 we knew what we
had to do. The girls were
confident and prepared to go
take the win. We were able
to tie the game up mid way
through the 3rd quarter at
20 – 20 and then bangs made
a 6 point run. From that
point on I felt we took over
and it was our game. It was
like a great boxing match.
They delivered a punch we
would counter with a
combination of jabs, but
ultimately we were able to
deliver the knockout blow.
With a minute to go we tied
the game and with 50 seconds
left we took our first lead
of the knight and held them
off to take home a huge
district win for us. Just
like last week we only need
three more. Come watch us
Tuesday night as we take on
the Brady Bulldogs at 6:30pm
we need your support.

Yes! First district win at home. We played great
basketball the 1st and 3rd quarters. We were able to
completely control the game those two quarters.
Unfortunately, the 2nd and 4th quarters we just coasted.
We were Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde tonight. We got the win
though. I will take a win anyway we can get it. Great
crowd tonight the girls really enjoyed the crowd noise
and all the people in the stands. We hope we gave the
crowd a good show. The BIPS kids also did a great job
and I saw a lot of future Bluekatts working on those
ball handling skills. Keep working. We have a big game
in Bangs Friday and we hope we travel with a big group
of fans. The girls are really playing well at the right
time of the year. Go Bluekatts

BLUECATS VERSUS DUBLIN LIONS
1/28/2010
The
Coleman JV Blue Bluecats started the second half of
district with a 29 -14 home victory over the visiting
Dublin Lions. The game started out rather slow as both
teams had a hard time finding the basket. A defensive
standstill for most of the game, the JV blue used a
strong fourth quarter to seal the victory.

On January 21st the 7th grade boys defeated

Saba 52 1-15-10
1/27/2010
We travel to San Saba on
Friday 15th to take on the undefeated Lady
Dillos. Though we came up short I believe we
found out a lot about ourselves in that
game. We found out that we can come back,
that we can handle constant pressure and
that a hostile environment can be really fun
to play in. We did so many things well and
were able to be really balanced on offense.
Our defense held them in check for most of
the night. The one thing that really hurt us
was the free throw line going 8 for 21 and
that ultimately was the difference in the
game. In the fourth quarter we missed 7 free
throws and you have to make those when you
are on the road. Wasn’t much to say after
the game you could see it in their eyes.
They finally knew. They knew they could do
it they believed.
Coleman 41 vs
Comanche 27 1-19-10
1/27/2010
Back to back road games. I
was told it had been over 30 years since a
girls team had traveled to Comanche and won
on their court. We not only won but we
dominated them from the start to the finish.
We defensively dominated them. At half time
they had 12 points and we only allowed
3points in the third. The girls were the
most focused I had seen them all year. Every
time they tried to make a move we countered
with strong defense and patient offense. The
crowd was great and it was a great feeling
to hush the Comanche crowd I don’t believe I
have ever heard them so quiet. That was a
great feeling for me and the girls but I
must say many of our parents and fans got a
great kick out of kicking Comanche’s butt at
Comanche. Now we just have to repeat it 5
more times. We can do it and we would love
to have rock the gym each and every game.

Bluecats Versus
Comanche Indians
1/21/2010
Sophomore Reid Needham led the team in
scoring with 13 points. “I was really
impressed with the way our young guys
stepped up. I brought two gentlemen up and
they both did a good job for us. Freshman
Anthony Thomas did a good job of taking care
of the basketball and getting our offense
set up. Reid did a good job of finding ways
to score around the basket. I do understand
that was a tough situation to put those guys
in (playing against the #1 team in district)
but I think they handled themselves well.
Travis Brixey had a very good game around
the basket in the rebounding category.” We
are still trying to find ways to cut down on
our turnovers and making baskets on the
offensive end.” The Bluecats are OPEN this
Friday and will continue action next
Tuesday, January 26, 2010 against Dublin

GAME SUMMARY
The Coleman JV Blue Bluecats, without the
services of their season top scorers, went
into Comanche and pulled a tremendous
victory over the Indians 38-35. The team did
a great job of playing within themselves and
taking advantage of the officials calls by
shooting 30 free shots in the game. The
Bluecats again used the press to take the
lead in the 4th quarter. The Indians led the
entire game until the middle of the 4th
quarter and the Bluecats took control the
rest of the way. The Bluecat JV Blue is now
13-4 and 4-2 to finish the first half of
district.

What could have been! This game could have been the big
district win we needed at home. We were hoping to give
our home fans a district win, something we have not been
able to do in our own house. We had chances. I am never
disappointed in how hard these young ladies play each
and every night. They do great things offensively and
defensively each and every night against great
competition. That I know. What gets us is crunch time.
We are working so hard to learn how to win big games. We
talked last night after the game about not being afraid
to fail. About letting go of the past and being willing
to take advantage of our opportunities when they come. I
believe sometimes people fear success because with it
comes expectations. Once we “Just Do It” stealing from
Nike we are on our way. We are so so close it makes us
sick and the girls know it and teams we play know it. We
just have to “Just Do It”. We have a great opportunity
to knock off the District leader and undefeated Dillos
of San Saba and hopefully our Mojo on the Road keeps
working. These are great young ladies, I am extremely
proud of what we are and more so of who these ladies are
they deserve your support.

Great game! We came out a little tight and struggled
shooting but we were able to create turnovers for easy
shots that helped us out early. We went in at half time
only up by 5pts but it felt like we had dominated them
everywhere but on the score board. The second half our
defense was just as strong but our shooting picked up
and we were able to pull away. I thought everyone really
did well. We have a very balanced team. We have multiple
girls that can score at any given time and that is
really helping our offense taking pressure of our girls
to know that everyone is a threat. We still haven’t hit
on all cylinders yet this year. So that is a good
feeling knowing we still have our best basketball ahead
of us. We are a very dangerous team as long as we keep
playing defense like we have been. We have two very
tough teams this week with Early coming here Tuesday and
we travel to San Saba Friday to finish out the first
round of District.

Basketball Update
1/6/2010
On
December 14, 2009 the boys hosted the Brady bulldogs and
came away with a hard earned 36-33 victory. Skyler
Builta led the scoring with 16 pts, followed by Royce
Harris with 12, Jaquan Hemphill with 6 and Jeff
Kirkpatrick with 2. On January 4, 2010 the boys
travelled to Comanche and took on the Indians. Coleman
won the game 48-28. Royce Harris had the hot hand with
26 points, while Jaquan Hemphill had 5, Skyler Builta 4,
Andrew Stovall 4, Bo Beal 4, and Jeff Kirkpatrick 4. The
boys now have a record of 3 wins and 3 loses. The team
is really playing well together and none of the boys are
selfish. Even when we have some high scorers, they are
dishing the ball to their teammates frequently. I
couldn’t be more proud of the team effort. The boys
travel to Wall January 7 for a tournament assuming the
weather cooperates.

I was proud of how hard our girls played. I thought we
were in control of the game going into half time. We
came out good in the 3rd they hit some outside shots and
we started turning the ball over more and they worked
into our lead and got within 2pt going into the 4th. But
in the 4th we lost focus and stopped working the ball up
the court in the press and let a 2pt lead be turned into
a 9pt deficit in about 3 minutes. We were able to get it
back to within 4pts and with a little over a minute to
go we had to start putting them on the line and
unfortunately for us they were able to sink some clutch
free throws and we were still having trouble with the
press and missed some important shots down the stretch.
I was proud at how hard we played and the how well we
played defensely but we have to cut down on our
turnovers if we want to be a playoff team this year. We
travel to Brady Friday in hopes of bringing home a win.
Junior Varsity Boys fall
short of beating Bangs
1/6/2010
The JV White Bluecats’ comeback effort fell just short
against the Bangs Dragons last night as they tried to
overcome a sluggish first half and many missed
opportunities. This was the second loss for the Bluecats
in district and will look to rebound this Friday against
Brady.

“We started off the game against Bangs about as good as
we have started any game this season. We played really
well in the 1st, 3rd and 4th quarter. Bangs was able to
score 25 points in the 2nd quarter, and whenever you are
playing a team of Bangs’ caliber that is a hard deficit
to overcome. I am extremely proud of the way our kids
played hard throughout the entire game. Gary Heath led
the team in scoring with 11 points. Travis Brixey did a
great job rebounding and hustling for us.” --Coach

COLEMAN BLUECAT GAME STATS
1/6/2010
GAME SUMMARY:
The Coleman JV Blue Bluecats used a strong press to gain a
victory over the Bangs Dragons JV Tuesday night. Once,
again the Bluecats started out sluggish to begin the game
scoring only three points to end the first quarter. The
Bluecats then outscored the Dragons the last three quarters
to take control of the game. The Bluecats showed a great
composure in taking control of the game after first
quarter. Defensively, the Bluecats showed consistency and
toughness allowing only twenty-eight points. The team again
spread the scoring. All players played aggressively and
increased their hustle the last three quarters.
COACHES
COMMENTS:
I was proud of the way the players took control of the game
in the second quarter. The team used the press to gain an
advantage and each player is beginning to understand the
different ways situations cause us to run the press. All
ten players are beginning to show that they understand their
roles and how to make the team better.

LADY MOUNTAINEERS
CONTINUE DOMINANCE
1/4/2010
On Thursday
December 31, New Year’s Eve,
Santa Anna played host to
Rising Star in a key
District 16 1A Division 2
game. Rising Star started
the season very slow but had
gained some momentum with a
big victory over Blanket and
an overtime loss to
pre-season district favorite
Zephyr and was sitting all
alone in third place in the
district with one loss.
Rising Star struck first
taking a 2-0 lead which was
the only lead they would
have all night. The Lady
Mountaineers who had not
played a game in 10 days
were able to recover and by
the end of the quarter, had
a commanding 14-6 lead. From
that point on the Lady
Mountaineers controlled the
tempo of the game, winning
by a final score of 47-33.
Santa Anna now has an 18-3
season record and 6-0
district record.
This was expected to be a
rebuilding year in which
graduation resulted in the
loss of an All-state, an
All-region and two
All-district players. The
2009-10 basketball version
has done an outstanding job
of maintaining the momentum
that was created last year.
This year ended with Santa
Anna in a better position to
win district than it was at
this point in the previous
season. Both teams had three
losses but there is no
district blemish as was the
case last year.
Santa Anna lost to #12
ranked Paint Rock by scores
of 25-53 and 41-50 in the
Veribest Tournament. These
losses were unique in the
fact that it was a six team
double elimination
tournament. SA had to play
two games each day with
Paint Rock being the second
game for two of those days.
The Lady Mountaineers played
a fresh Paint Rock team both
days. After the first loss,
the ladies were able to
regroup and on their sixth
game in three days, led
Paint Rock by nine points at
half time only to succumb to
fatigue in the second half.
The Lady Mountaineers let a
game slip away against
Priddy in the Rochelle
Tournament losing 43-46.
Currently Santa Anna is
riding a seven game winning
streak. When one compares
this team to last year’s
there is a considerable
difference. Last year’s team
was small, quick and very
fast. It relied on defensive
pressure and the fast break
to account for most of its
offense. This year’s version
is taller and not as fast.
Solid defense, rebounding
and perimeter shooting have
been keys to Lady
Mountaineer success. The
season’s team scoring
average is 53 ppg while the
defense has given up an
average of 32 ppg.
Some significant victories
have also been achieved. The
Lady Mountaineers defeated
Paint Rock in a thrilling
come-from-behind 57-56
victory. Cornerstone
Christian Schools have been
a recent thorn in the Lady
Mountaineers side, but was
defeated 52-41 and 66-44 in
the Veribest Tournament.
Santa Anna defeated a very
tall and athletic Eden team
48-39 to advance to the
finals of the Veribest
Tournament. In district play
the Lady Mountaineers shot
“lights out” against May
with huge 74-36 victory. The
post girls played an
outstanding game against
Blanket in the 43-33 win.
Santa Anna has two big games
coming up this week.
Tradition rich Brookesmith
will face the Lady
Mountaineers in Brookesmith
on Tuesday. The pre-season
favorite and traditionally
strong Zephyr Lady Bulldogs
will square off on Friday at
Santa Anna. Last year it was
a battle of two heavyweights
that threw some really heavy
punches at each other and
this year appears to be a
possible repeat. Both teams
are currently tied for first
place in district. If you
get a chance, come watch the
Lady Mountaineers as they
slug it out against Zephyr
in Santa Anna.

First game of the New Year
and it was exciting. We had
a great start to the game
and really had the game
under control for about 3
quarters. Some untimely
missed shots in the fourth
quarter almost cost us the
game. We played great team
defense but you still have
to score when you get your
chances in close. We gave up
the lead with under a minute
to go in the game and down
one we were forced to foul.
The Dublin player goes to
shoot one-n-one and misses
the front end. With 10
seconds on the clock we
rebound push the ball up the
court from Morales to Cruz
who finds Zarate trailing at
the three point line and the
ball goes through that
lovely net as the buzzer
sounds. And we get out of
Dublin with the win. This
was great for our girls to
show them how to just keep
fighting and how important
it is to never give up and
believe in yourselves. Great
win and we hope to put back
to back district win
together against a very good
Bangs team on Tuesday at
home.
