SlateLewis Glenn Slate, 83 passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2012.


Memorial service: 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter and St. Paul Episcopal Church, 3900 Morris Ln., Arlington.


Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Community Hospice of Texas Inpatient Services at Arlington Memorial Hospital.
Glenn was born May 14, 1928 in Gouldbusk to Sam Houston and Emma Verna Slate. Glenn was married to his wife, B.J. for 61 years. He was a Past Master of the Fort Worth Masonic Lodge 148. He was an industrial supply salesman and retired from ENCO.
He was preceded in death by his Wife, B.J Slate.


Survivors: Daughters, Lisa Slate and loving friend, Sandy Steele, and Tanya Admire and husband, Ray; and grandchildren, Spencer "Pistol" and Austin "Shooter" Admire.

Lela Metts Nettles, 90, of Coleman, died Monday, February 20, 2012 at Coleman Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Adam Comeaux officiating, assisted by Sam Wilson. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
She was born Lela Myrtle Metts on May 13, 1921 in southern Coleman County, the daughter of G.T. Metts and Allie Nell Dobbins Metts. She grew up in the Brown Ranch community and graduated from Mozelle High School in 1939. Lela married Archie Nettle on August 30, 1949 in Coleman, and the celebrated 62 years of marriage, before he preceded her in death on May 10, 2010. She worked at Overall-Morris Hospital (now Coleman County Medical Center) for many years as a Licensed Vocational Nurse, and later in the Medical Records Department. She was a member of the Elm Street Church of Christ, where she enjoyed teaching at the JOY Station Tuesday School.
Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Gee of Coleman, Kathryn Payne of Dallas; one granddaughter, Christy Hutchinson and husband, Greg, of San Antonio; one grandson, Mark Payne and wife, Brandy, of Carrollton; three great granddaughters, Rebecca, Hannah and Leah Hutchinson and one soon to be born in April and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, Daniel Graves Nettles, two brothers, one sister, and a great granddaughter, Danielle Renee Hutchinson.
Family visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman.

sympathy imageDonald (Donnie) Smith, 78 of Coleman, died Friday, February 17, 2012 at Songbird Lodge Nursing Home in Brownwood. Graveside funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 20, 2012 at the Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion with Carl Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home, 400 West Pecan, Coleman.
Donnie Smith was born October 20, 1933 in Santa Anna, the son of Simon Windon Smith and Violet Audrey Graham Smith. He grew up in Coleman and attended Coleman High School. He served in the United States Army. From 1987 to 2003, he owned and operated Don’s Oil Tools in Abilene, selling, servicing and repairing oil field equipment. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his two sons, Kip Smith of Odessa, Koy Smith of Hawley; one daughter, Audrey Crutcher of Mineral Wells; two sisters, Dorothy Musick of Abilene, Ruth Lobestein of Coleman; one brother, Jackie Smith of Santa Anna; six grandchildren, Kole Smith, Jeremy Crutcher, Carli Crutcher, Kaitlin  Crutcher, Jayden Dodson, Cameron Washburn and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.
Family visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, February 19, 2012 at Stevens Funeral Home.

Harold Claiborne, 83, of Coleman, died Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at Abilene Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Richard Hetzel officiating, assisted by Rev. John Stanislaw. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Harold Claiborne was born September 17, 1928, in Trinidad, Colorado, the son of James Ernest Claiborne and Carmel Harmon Claiborne. He grew up in Coleman and attended Coleman High School. He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps and married Viola Phillips on April 9, 1948 in Cross Plains. Harold and Vi lived in Midland for 45 years, where he was a mechanical contractor. Following retirement, they moved back to Coleman. Harold was a member of the Men’s Downtown Sunday School Class and First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Viola (Vi) Claiborne of Coleman, four children, Patrick Michael Claiborne and wife, Kim, of Wichita Falls, Terry Dean Claiborne and wife, Shelia, of Midland, Patricia Lynn Cloud and husband, Jerry, of Horseshoe Bay, Kay White and husband, Stephen, of Fort Worth; 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, two nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Curtis Claiborne, Jim Claiborne and one sister, Evelyn Claiborne Johnson.
Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 17, 2011 at Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lola Mae Dixon 83 years old of Coleman, passed from this life on Saturday, February 11, 2012 in the Coleman County Medical Center.

Lola was born September 22, 1928 in Eola Texas to Homer Franklin Hollaway & Cynthis Ellen Blackman Hollaway. She married Monroe Lee Dixon on July 21, 1951 in Brownwood, they had 25 wonderful years together. Lola was a hairdresser and Home Maker.

She is survived by 2 daughters and son in law: Maggie & Grady Wright of Novice, Betty Lynn of Coleman, 4 sons and daughters in law: Billy Dixon of Mesquite, Robert Dixon of Coleman, Samual & Marie Dixon of Coleman, and Danny & Cindy Dixon of Durant, Oklahoma, 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Lola was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Monroe, and 2 brothers; George Hollaway and Carroll Hollaway.

Service will be Friday, February 17, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. In the Duren Cemetery, Mills County with Rev. Patrick Bennett officiating. Interment will be under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman.
