The May half term is right around the corner, running from the 26th to the 30th of May, and many families across the UK will be eyeing a quick escape to reset before summer. While it might seem like the window for booking a staycation has closed, that’s not necessarily the case.
According to Richard Edwards, the owner of White House Hideaway, a peaceful log cabin retreat nestled in the Wye Valley, there’s still time to book a last-minute break without overspending.
Richard has seen the full spectrum of booking habits, from those who plan six months out to guests who book the same week. Below, he reveals the practical steps that can help holidaymakers find a peaceful staycation spot without the premium price tag.
1. Be Flexible With Dates and Days
If you can shift your break slightly away from the weekend, you’ll have a better chance of finding availability and lower prices.
“Midweek stays are usually less in demand, which means they’re often more affordable,” says Richard. “You might only need to nudge your plans by a day or two to unlock better value. It also means fewer crowds, which makes for a more peaceful break.”
2. Check for Last-Minute Cancellations
A lot of booking sites now allow you to filter by properties that have recently reopened due to a cancellation. These can be a goldmine for spontaneous travellers.
“People cancel all the time, often with just a few days’ notice,” Richard explains. “We’ve had couples book our cabins the night before because a slot suddenly became free. It’s always worth checking, even if you think everywhere is booked.”
3. Use Late Deal Sites – But Act Fast
Websites that specialise in last-minute UK getaways often highlight discounted stays that need filling urgently. Just don’t delay once you find a deal.
“These offers tend to go quickly,” says Richard. “Set your filters to show only the dates you’re free, and move fast when you see something you like. If you hesitate, someone else will grab it.”
4. Search Outside the Hotspots
Popular locations like the Lake District or Cornwall may already be packed, but rural spots just outside national parks or seaside towns can offer just as much charm for a lower price.
“Here in the Wye Valley, we’re a little off the beaten track, and that works in guests’ favour,” says Richard. “They get peace, scenery and nature without the inflated price tag that comes with big-name tourist spots.”
5. Use Map View for Hidden Gems
Rather than relying on the first few results in a list, switch to map view when browsing. This often reveals availability in areas you wouldn’t have thought to search for.
“People tend to click the first listings they see, which are often paid promotions,” Richard says. “Map view lets you spot cabins, cottages or farm stays that are tucked away but still available – and often cheaper.”
6. Call the Property Directly
Not all availability is shown on big booking platforms, and some places might offer a better rate if you contact them directly.
“Sometimes we can offer flexibility or a small discount to guests who book through our site or call us,” Richard explains. “Even if it’s just a welcome basket or early check-in, a direct booking can come with perks.”
7. Consider One-Night or Two-Night Stays
If a full week isn’t available or feels too expensive, a shorter stay can still offer a proper break, especially if you’re not travelling far.
“Even a single night in nature can help you switch off and feel recharged,” says Richard. “Don’t assume a short break isn’t worth it. We regularly have guests tell us one night in the countryside feels like a whole weekend away.”
Richard Edwards, Owner of White House Hideaway, comments:
“It’s easy to assume that if you haven’t booked a May half term break by now, it’s too late, but that’s just not true. Some of the best stays we’ve had were from guests who booked just a day or two before arrival. If you know how to look, there are always options.
“The biggest mistake people make is searching too narrowly. A bit of flexibility, whether that’s with dates, location or length of stay, opens up so many more possibilities. And if you avoid the obvious choices and check for cancellations, you can often find unique spots that others have missed.
“It’s also worth checking the property’s own website or giving them a call. Some owners might have availability that’s not shown on big booking platforms, or be able to offer extra flexibility. Even small perks like early check-in or tips for local activities can make a last-minute trip feel more special.”
