Dr Michael Hatcher, CEO of Sovereign Cooper, has celebrated the completion of the company’s latest development, The Front Porch on Auburn, with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Wednesday, 16 April.
Located in Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn District, the new co-living space is a fully furnished affordable housing development, supported by funding from the Historic District Development Corporation (HDDC).
“Today is a great day! It’s a great day for the HDDC. It’s a great day for Soveregin Cooper, and a great day for everybody involved,” Michael said. “We were able to take an organisation and help their vision come true by being able to support the neighbourhood, the community, and its people. This building is going to help and make a positive impact on people’s lives for years to come.”
The Front Porch on Auburn represents a $37 million master-planned mixed-use scheme. The development comprises 33 co-living, dormitory-style residential units offering a total of 67 beds, aimed at college students and young professionals. Rent begins at $1,400.
The scheme includes a range of communal facilities and contemporary features, including urban agriculture, stainless steel appliances, private en-suite bathrooms, and a rooftop terrace offering skyline views. It also incorporates retail units and affordable housing to better integrate and serve its residents.
Sovereign Cooper has been actively engaged with the Front Porch project since its inception, with the intention of delivering affordable housing options in high-cost areas of Atlanta.
“The beauty of this project is that it’s highly amenitised. The design and aesthetic are high-end, and the goal of HDDC was to create affordable housing that didn’t look institutional,” Michael said.
Established in 2021, Sovereign Cooper’s completion of the Front Porch on Auburn marks the firm’s first multifamily mixed-use development. The company also recently finalised the Briarwood Park Project in Brookhaven, Georgia, and has begun construction on the Henderson Place Apartment development, which will add 77 more affordable housing units to the Atlanta metropolitan area.
Alongside founding Sovereign Cooper, Michael serves as President & CEO of Sovereign Construction & Development LLC, a company that specialises in development, construction management, and general contracting.
Dr Hatcher remains focused on enhancing the construction project delivery experience for all parties involved, with particular interest in how projects are procured and managed. His primary areas of expertise and academic focus include integrated project delivery and collaborative building practices such as Construction Management at Risk.
Michael and his team at Sovereign Construction are currently engaged in the Concourse D widening project at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport—the busiest airport in the world—scheduled for completion in 2029.
With Sovereign Cooper’s “Together We Build” ethos, Michael seeks to infuse every project with a spirit of unity and cooperation. “That’s exactly what we did today, and that’s exactly why we started Sovereign Cooper,” Michael said.
