New initiative reflects rising demand from American retirees seeking overseas lifestyles.

In the wake of the recent U.S. Presidential election, there has been a noticeable increase in Americans—particularly retirees—expressing interest in relocating abroad.

Responding to this growing appetite for overseas living and culturally enriching experiences among older adults, The Good Life Abroad (TGLA) has launched its latest long-stay programme in Rome, Italy. Designed for individuals aged 55 and above, the new offering allows participants to live in the Italian capital for one to three months, blending independent living with meaningful cultural engagement.

Participants will be accommodated in stylishly furnished flats located in the heart of Rome’s vibrant neighbourhoods, ensuring easy access to iconic landmarks, local markets, and everyday Roman routines. Unlike traditional travel tours, the focus here is on personal autonomy and cultural immersion—complemented by optional activities and the support of a local Community Manager who organises weekly meet-ups and experiences.

This new Rome programme represents the latest addition to TGLA’s growing selection of destinations, now spanning 13 European cities. Each location is structured around three key principles: independent living, curated cultural experiences, and a welcoming community of like-minded travellers.

“We’re seeing a shift in how people over 55 want to travel,” said Andrew Motiwalla, founder of The Good Life Abroad. “They’re not looking for packaged sightseeing—they want to slow down, engage with local life, and form real connections. Our Rome program was created in direct response to that demand.”

Key features of the Rome experience include Italian cookery classes, beginner language instruction, and historical walking tours. The on-site Community Manager provides local knowledge and coordination, while the programme also includes medical insurance with access to English-speaking healthcare professionals in Rome.

TGLA’s offerings have proven especially popular with retirees, professionals on sabbatical, and solo travellers who value both independence and community.

In addition to several Italian destinations, The Good Life Abroad also runs programmes in Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, England, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.

Founded on the belief that truly transformative travel comes from cultural immersion, The Good Life Abroad continues to broaden its range of experiences, catering to a new generation of older adults redefining retirement and midlife discovery.
